TAGLINE CHANGE: They're Watching

NOTE: I transcribed the emails how they were on Scully's computer screen.

TEASER
In voiceover, Scully talks to her son. There are flashbacks of shippy scenes of Mulder and Scully.

SCULLY (V.O.): One day, you'll ask me to speak of a truth-of the miracle of your birth. To explain what is unexplained. And if I falter or fail on this day, know there is an answer, my child, a sacred imperishable truth, but one you may never hope to find alone. Chance meeting your perfect other, your perfect opposite-your protector and endangerer. Chance embarking with this other on the greatest of journeys--the search for truth's fugitive and imponderable. If one day this chance may befall you, my son, do not fail or falter to seize it. The truths are out there. And if one day you should behold a miracle, as I have in you, you will learn the truth is not found in science or on some unseen plane, but by looking into your own heart. And in that moment you will be blessed…and stricken. For the truest truths are what hold us together, or keep us painfully, desperately apart.

Scully kneels down at a train station over a body.

ACT ONE
The scene first shows what appear to be surveillance videos of Scully, again at the train station.

FEDERAL GROUNDS INTERNET CAFÉ
WASHINGTON, D.C.

Scully walks down the street pushing William in his stroller, and enters the café.

Scully sits down and opens her email. She has an email with the subject "Dearest Dana" from someone with the email "trustno1@mail.com."

She opens the email and reads it in voiceover:

SCULLY (V.O.) (starting to tear up): I've resisted contacting you for reasons I know you continue to appreciate. But, to be honest, some unexpected dimensions of my new life are eating away at any resolve I have left. I'm lonely, Dana, uncertain of my ability to live like this. I want to come home. To you, and to William.

Scully hears a baby crying and turns to look.

She turns back to the computer and writes her response:

SCULLY (V.O.): I'm physically shaking right now, seeing your words. Wishing it were you speaking them to me. I want so badly to see you too, but you are still not safe here.

Scully still hears the baby crying and turns again. She realizes that the baby is there alone. She goes over to see what is going on. The waitress comes up, and Scully says that she thinks it's mother is the woman outside.

The woman, Patty, is standing outside arguing with a man.

She comes back in and apologizes and wheels her baby away.

FBI TRAINING ACADEMY
QUANTICO, VIRGINIA

Scully rereads a printout of the email that Mulder sent her. Doggett and Reyes approach her, so she puts it away before they can see it.

Doggett tells her that someone has contacted him and that they claim to have secret military files on the super soldiers. However, he will only give the information to Mulder.

Scully tells him that even if she did think that it were a good idea, she has no way of contacting him.

Scully enters her class to start teaching when Doggett and Reyes follow her in. She follows them back out again.

Doggett asks if she understands what they are being offered. If they have the names of the super soldiers they could go after them and have a way to make it safe for Mulder to come home. She tells him that they don't know the man and she doesn't want to put Mulder's life in more danger than it's already in. Doggett asks her when she is going to trust him, or trust someone.

Scully arrives home and gets out of her car. As she is ready to get William out she hears arguing. She sees that it is the same woman and man from the café. The man is taking the baby, which Patty doesn't want.

Scully asks if she should call the police, but she doesn't answer her, trying to get the man to stay. Finally he drives off.

Scully and Patty enter Scully's apartment. As Scully puts William down, Patty tells Scully she doesn't think it's a good idea to file a police report. She also tells her that the man is her husband.

Scully starts to tell her that she understands, but then says that what she means is that it's hard enough just taking care of a baby.

PATTY: You don't have anyone, do you?
SCULLY (sadly): No, but I wish I did.
PATTY: Maybe he'll come back.

Scully smiles.

BETHESDA, MARYLAND
9:32 PM

Doggett is on a stakeout when Reyes pulls up and joins him. Doggett couldn't get a trace on the call, but found out the general location. He tells her that the area is pretty vacant, except for the building that they are staking out.

Reyes tells him that if the source is for real and if it's Mulder's chance to come home and they "spook the spook" and maybe the chance goes away, or worse, it drives Mulder deeper. Doggett just shakes his head in affirmation.

The two watch as a car pulls up and a man, who we know as Patty's husband, gets out and enters the building.

REYES: Where're you going?
DOGGETT: To take a little look into his car.
REYES: I'll say it again. What we risk is compromising Mulder's return.
DOGGETT: I don't plan on getting' caught.

Doggett gets out of the car.

Inside, the man enters a computer lab.

He sits down at his desk and talks a little with who Scully comes to call, the Shadow Man.

The Shadow Man is watching the monitor in front of him. On it is Doggett and Reyes at the man's car.

ACT TWO
Again the scene shows more video of Scully at the station. She is looking around, like she's waiting for someone.

Reyes walks up. Scully sees her but acts as if she doesn't know her.

5:41 AM
The man walks out of the building and starts to get in his car.

Doggett wakes Reyes up.

The man drives away and they follow him.

Patty is lying on Scully's couch. She gets up and checks in on Scully. Then she turns off the baby monitor.

Patty walks over and picks up William.

In the bedroom, Scully's phone rings. Doggett tells her that the guy man they were following just went into her building.

Scully gets up and goes into the living room. She points her gun at Patty and tells her to put William down.

Patty lays William back down.

Scully's door knob starts to rattle.

Outside her door, Patty's husband is trying to pick Scully's lock. Doggett and Reyes have come up behind him. He attacks the man and gets him on the ground.

Reyes tells Scully that it is them, so she opens the door.

Patty and her husband sit on Scully's couch while they talk to them.

Doggett asks the man who he works for, but he tells him that he isn't at liberty to say. Doggett says that maybe his wife is at liberty and doesn't want to go to jail.

Scully suggests that they planned everything, including their argument at the café to get at her baby.

Patty tells her that she wants to protect William.

Patty's husband tells her not to say anything else unless she wants to get them killed. She tells him that he said that they (Scully, etc.) could help them.

Doggett asks what's going on, and the man answers, "They're watching."

Doggett, Scully, and Reyes all look at each other. Scully walks over to her window and pulls down the shade. She then walks back.

Scully tells him that if he has something to say, to say it.

He finally tells him that he works for the NSA. The name on his driver's license is false. If they were to call the police he would only be detained long enough until another NSA agent could release him. He doesn't exist as a citizen, nor does anyone he works with.

Doggett asks him then what he is going there.

He says that as they can see, his wife's upset. He was coming to get her, to stop this very event.

Reyes asks him what she is so upset about. Patty tells them that there is something different about her daughter Joy, just like there is something different with William. Doggett asks how William is different, and then asks how he knows anything about Scully or her son.

He tells them that he knows virtually everything about all of them. He tells Scully that several months ago she saw William affect movement of the mobile above his crib, he spun it as if with his mind. The same thing happened to them.

Reyes questions how he has been spying. He says with various cameras and technology. She guesses then that it was he who was their contact. He tells her not directly. He only looks at what they tell him to. However, he has a supervisor who he has told everything about Joy and William to. His supervisor started to look into it and found out things about the super soldier program. Things that he won't tell them, and crimes against innocent people.

Scully asks him what he wants with Mulder, and he tells her that his supervisor thinks that Mulder is the only one who is capable of making the connections. Patty tells her that maybe they can help her and maybe she can help them find out the truth about what our babies really are.

Suddenly the phone rings and Scully picks it up. It's the Shadow Man, using a voice scrambler. He lets her know that he's watching them, and wants her to get Mulder. She tells him that she doesn't know how to reach him. Tears are running down her face at this point and her lip is trembling.

He tells her that he knows that she emailed Mulder and he can read her letter to him if she wants.

She asks him why she should trust him. He's just a voice on the phone. She tells him that she needs to see his face.

He tells her that he will meet her at the café in twenty minutes, but that she needs to go alone.

Scully arrives at the café and sits on a bench outside. Her cell phone rings. Watching her every move, the Shadow Man tells her to get into the car across the street and follow his directions. He gets her to drive around, and even has her change cars.

It is dark out when Scully gets to the "middle of nowhere" as she calls it. He tells her to get out of the car and open the trunk. Inside are clothes that he tells her to change into. She takes her gun off and changes.

Shadow Man walks up to her and tells her to put her clothes and gun in the trunk.

He then uses a remote to drive the car away, and then pushes a button and it blows up.

He asks Scully for her watch. She is angry and confused but gives it to him anyway. He checks it (for bugs?) and then gives it back.

She tells him that the clothes she has on are her size and asks him how he knows her size.

SHADOW MAN: Size? I know your blood type, your resting heart rate, your childhood fear of clowns. I know the name of your college boyfriend, your true hair color, your ATM pin number, favorite charities, pet peeves. I know you spend too much time alone. And I know, that on one lonely night you invited Mulder to your bed.
SCULLY: Oh my God.
SHADOW MAN: I was as surprised as you are.

Scully asks him who authorizes him and who gives him the right to do what he's doing. She asks him who he is, and he says simply that he is the future and risked his life coming there. He tells her that if she doesn't contact Mulder within twenty-four hours he will disappear.

He tells her to get into a different car a half of a mile away and leave. She walks away.

ACT THREE
FBI TRAINING ACADEMY
QUANTICO, VIRGINIA

Doggett interrupts Scully's class.

She walks out into the hallway. He tells her that now he is worried about what he has gotten her into. Doggett wants to know why if he wanted to talk to Mulder he came to her. He says that it is because the man knows that Mulder only will resurface if the one person he trusts asks him to.

Scully tells him that he didn't come to her, he came to him. She says that the woman that she took in blew his cover and he had no other choice.

Doggett asks her if maybe Patty and her husband are in on it too, but Scully doesn't believe that they are.

He asks then how she knows that they aren't being used by the Shadow Man to lure Mulder out and kill him. She says that that can't be because they don't even trust him, for their own reasons. He tells her to think about it-that the man knows everything and even reads her email. How can she hope to secure Mulder a safe way home? She tells him that it has already been prearranged and he will arrive by train at midnight. She tells him that she can't call it off.

He tells her that maybe he can reach him. She tells him that he can't do that to her. She wants to see him so bad. He knows that, and he's just trying to make sure that she can. She just tells him that it's too late, and then leaves.

10:48 PM
Scully walks along the train platform waiting. The scene changes to the surveillance video.

FBI EVIDENCE LAB
Back at the bureau, Doggett has a woman check the clothes Scully was given to see if she could find out anything.

Scully is still waiting. She looks at her watch; it is almost 11:30.

Reyes walks up but Scully doesn't acknowledge her, just like we saw before in the surveillance videos.

The scene once again switches to surveillance.

When it switches back to the present, Patty's wife is there. He sprays something over the camera lens to block its view.

Doggett looks at the clock and then leaves the office.

It is only a few minutes to midnight and Scully continues to wait.

Suddenly Reyes notices what Patty's husband is doing. He is pulling out a gun. He turns towards Scully, and in slow-motion, Reyes yells to Scully. Scully turns to see the man, and he yells something to her. The camera pans to show that he is not aiming his gun at Scully, but rather at the Shadow Man.

Reyes knocks Scully down.

The Shadow Man fires, hitting Patty's husband. He falls to the ground.

The Shadow Man continues walking towards Scully and Reyes, pointing his gun at them.

Shots ring out, but they came from Doggett who came up behind the Shadow Man. The Shadow Man falls and rolls onto the train tracks.

One of the guards sees what happened and says into his radio to keep the train rolling.

Scully runs up to him yelling at him to stop the train. He ignores her and repeats the order.

Scully yells to Mulder, but there is no answer.

Scully rushes over to Patty's husband who is lying on the ground. He dies where he lies.

The camera pans away, like in the teaser.

ACT FOUR
The police are now at the scene.

Patty comes up to Scully and tells her that she is sorry; it was never supposed to happen like it did and they never meant to harm her. They just wanted answers. She also tells her that her husband wasn't a part of it. She tells her that she knows that he was just trying to protect her. She tells Scully that the man that he worked for is the one responsible. She knows this. Scully tells her that she is sorry. They are both almost in tears.

She leaves.

Doggett comes up and tells Scully and Reyes that what he was afraid of has happened. They can't find the man that he shot. She asks where he is at, and he tells her he doesn't know, and that it shouldn't make a bit of sense, but it does. He had the DNA on her clothes tested, only the man's DNA couldn't be tested. He tells her that it s some kind of weird DNA complex with iron or something. Reyes tells him that it doesn't make sense, but he tells her that he thinks that it does. The man is a super soldier.

Scully knows that she has to warn Mulder. She runs over to the guard and tells him to get on the radio and contact them and tells them that they've got a situation on the train. She tells him that the man that fell on the tracks has gotten on the train.

Before he can contact anyone, they contact him. They tell him that a man jumped off the train and ran into the rock quarry.

MANVILLE ROCK QUARRY
1:17 AM

The three agents arrive at the quarry. Doggett and Reyes walk down the slope while Scully drives down.

Doggett sees someone running, who appears to be Mulder. He yells to him but the man keeps running until he is out of site. They chase after him.

Meanwhile Scully has gotten to the bottom and calls for Mulder, but there is no answer.

She suddenly sees someone walking towards her through the mist. However, she realizes that it is not Mulder, but rather the Shadow Man.

Scully runs away and then stops planning her next move. She looks up from the bottom of the quarry. There is nowhere to go.

The Shadow Man approaches her so she pulls out her gun and tells him to stop. He continues to advance on her. She screams at him, asking why he wants to kill them. He tells her that Mulder must die. Mulder or her son. She asks him what it has to do with her son, and what is wrong with him.

Suddenly the man raises his arms and starts to shake. He looks to the rocks. A look of terror washes over his face.

He continues to shake violently and drops to the ground. His skin starts to disappear and is replaced with a silver, metallic look. He is suddenly pulled, along with Scully's gun, into the rocks.

Scully just gets up and runs away, not looking back.

SCULLY (V.O.) [note: "Scully's Theme" plays here]: I hold no hope you can respond to this, or that it reaches you. I only hope that you are alive.

I cannot help believing that you jumped off that train because you knew what I now know--that these "super soldiers," if that's what they are, can in fact be destroyed. That the key to their destruction lies in the iron compound at that quarry.

I am scared for you, Mulder. And for William. The forces against us are unrelenting. But so is my determination. To see you again. To regain the comfort and safety that we shared for so brief a time.

Until then, I remain forever yours…Dana

Scully looks at William, and then clicks "send."

Overall Rating : 10!
*Shippy Rating: 10!
*Note: OK a new note. Ratings will be completely different now because of the absence of Mulder, and therefore most likely of most of the shippiness. The ratings for this season are not equally comparable to that of previous seasons, so they will more or less be rated on their own scale, with me (trying to) disregard the fact that DD is not in it as a component in the rating. Shippiness still (if any) will ALWAYS be based on MULDER and SCULLY (unless I decide to do MR/JD or something later). The shippy scale is still based on the Redux II scale (1-10, as Redux II being a 10 [now with Triangle being an 11, All Things being an 11.5, and Millennium being a 12, and Requiem a 12.5 all above the scale])*
