TEASER
WASHINGTON, D.C.
6:44 PM

People stand at the gate of the white house looking and taking pictures. One man climbs the fence and drops to the other side. He runs across the lawn with a gun until he is intercepted by some security guards. When they push him to the ground and try to take his gun, he shoots himself. He yells that he needs to tell the president something—the United States is being taken over by aliens. He holds up a CD for the guard to take. On it, in pen, are written the words, “Fight the Future.”

ACT ONE
Mulder sits in a chair in the hospital, touching his face and chest wounds, seeing flashes of some of the alien
experimentations he was subjected to. He stands up as Scully walks into the room with a doctor. She tells him that he should sit down, but that it’s good news.

The doctor tells him that his condition may be more incredible than his recovery. Scully says that the neurological disorder that he had is gone. The transfusions and antivirals that he was given have rid his body of the virus that was invading it. The scars on his face, hands, feet, and chest seem to be repairing themselves. He is in perfect health.

DOCTOR: How do you feel, Agent Mulder?
MULDER: Like Austin Powers.

Scully takes Mulder to his apartment. She says that it must feel good to be home.

Upon entering, Mulder looks around and tells Scully that something looks different. She tells him that his apartment is clean and he laughs.

Mulder walks over to his fish tank and comments that he is missing a Mollie. Scully tells him that she wasn’t as lucky as he was.

When Mulder sits down, Scully emotionally tells him how she has been feeling. She says that she doesn’t think that he understands what it’s like: to find out of his abduction, after searching for him only to have him returned dead, and to have him back again. He jokes that she acts like she’s surprised. As tears try to fall she tells him that she prayed a lot and her prayers have been answered. He adds that they have been answered—in more ways then one, and looks to her pregnant stomach. He says that he’s happy for her. He knows how much it means to her.

After a moment of uncomfortable silence, Mulder tells Scully that he doesn’t mean to be cold or ungrateful, but he has know idea where he fits in at that moment, and he is having trouble processing everything.

FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
PERKEY, WEST VIRGINIA

Absalom is in jail. A man comes through with books and tries to give one to him. He tries to make him go away, but he shows him the book, entitled The Coming Apocalypse. Absalom finally takes it from him.

Inside the front cover he finds a newspaper article about the census worker, Howard Salt, who jumped the fence at the white house, whom it says is dead.

When Skinner and Doggett come into Kersh’s office, he is watching a news report about Howard Salt. The reporter says that he was shouting “unspecified grievances.”

Kersh tells them that Scully sent him papers asking for Mulder’s reinstatement and is anxious to get him back. He noticed that since Doggett has been on the X-Files, they have solved more cases then Mulder and Scully had in seven [sic] years.  Skinner says that that’s not fair, and Kersh cuts him off saying that he meant because the other cases involved aliens. He says that the FBI isn’t a place for personal crusades. Doggett tells Kersh that he can’t ask him to tell Mulder that he is off of the X-Files. Kersh tells him that he isn’t asking him. Doggett says that he wanted him to find Mulder and he did, and not to charge him with driving a stake through his heart. Kersh snidely adds that maybe Doggett would rather have him close the X-Files, and then they’d both be getting what they wanted. Obviously that is not what Doggett wants.

Mulder is sitting on his couch when Scully and Skinner come in. Mulder questions that Kersh wants to give him a desk job.  Scully tells him that she thinks Kersh wants him to quit. Skinner tells him that it is more than that. He thinks that Kersh wants to hurt and punish Mulder. Mulder tells him that he also wants to punish him by putting him in the position that they are in, and Scully for not giving up on him.

Mulder says that it is a magic bullet that was fired eight (finally they got it right) years ago and that has been going around and around and now is poised to hit him in the back of his head. Scully tells him that she thinks the question is, are they going to sit there and let it happen.

Mulder looks to Scully and tells her that she is going to give birth in a couple months. She can talk as tough as she wants, but they know that soon there will be more important things going on in her life rather than whether or not the X-Files stays open.

Skinner tells him that Kersh is not shutting down the X-Files, but rather keeping Doggett running them. Mulder questions this, and Scully tells him that she had a partner for several months while he was gone, to help her find him. He simply says, “Mission accomplished.”

Mulder asks them if Doggett knows at all what he is doing. Skinner says that if he means with the paranormal, then not much.

MULDER:
I see. Then maybe the question is not ‘Who fired this magic bullet,’ but whether or not it was a lone gunmen.

Scully tells him that Doggett is being maneuvered just like him. He tells her that that is good--at least he’s maneuverable.

Mulder stands up and starts to leave the room. Skinner asks him where he is going, and he tells him that he is going to get dressed. For the first time in months he feels like getting back to work.

BASSETT COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA

Absalom is outside with the other inmates digging. He hits something with his shovel. He secretly bends down and picks up a piece of wood with a nail sticking out. He shoves it up his sleeve.

When the prisoners are being loaded into the police cars, he shoves the piece of wood into a cop’s face and takes off.

The police follow him, but he runs in front of a train just in time, leaving them waiting for it to pass.

Doggett comes into his house to find Absalom pointing a gun at him.

ACT TWO
Absalom pushes Doggett against the wall and makes him kneel on the floor. He checks the back of his neck. Doggett asks him why, and he tells him that he had to make sure that he was still himself.

He tells him that he will help him spread the word.

Absalom tells Doggett about Salt being killed because of what he knew, and that they are going to kill him. Doggett tells him that if he puts the gun down they won’t, but he tells him that they will kill him no matter what.

FBI TASK FORCE BRIEFING ROOM
4:45 PM

Skinner briefs the agents about Absalom while Scully tries to get in touch with Doggett on her cell phone.

Skinner shows a slide of the words “Fight the Future Forever” on a projector screen. It is a picture of the wall of Absalom’s cell where he carved the words. Skinner tells them that they don’t know what they mean, but Absalom has been talking about alien invasion. Skinner shows a slide of a group of the alien abductees. Absalom had also claimed of healings of the abductees that had been subjected to alien torture.

The agents in the room start to snicker. Skinner adds that the claims have never been substantiated or refuted, but the evidence of torture is real. Skinner shows a slide of a very sick Teresa Hoese. He tells them that the only way that they are going to get answers is to bring him in.

Skinner dismisses the agents and then walks over to Scully. She still has not been able to reach Doggett.

Suddenly Scully’s phone rings. She looks down and then hands the phone to Skinner. She tells him that she doesn’t know if it is going to make him feel any better. On the screen it reads, “Where is everybody? Come on down. Mulder.”

When Scully and Skinner enter the office, Mulder is sitting at his desk with his feet up grinning.

Scully asks him what he is doing, and Mulder asks her what it looks like he’s doing. Skinner says that it looks like he’s trying to give them ammunition to use on him.

MULDER: Hey, I’m just down here visiting my buds!

Mulder sarcastically asks where Agent Doggett is and what kind of hours he keeps. Scully tells him that he does not want to stir things up right now. Mulder asks why, and Skinner tells him that they have a man out in progress and he wants Doggett running it.

Mulder waives the abductee photo in front of them and asks if it has anything to do with it. The man at the white house is in the picture. Scully takes it from him and realizes that he is right.

MULDER: Consider that a freebie. Next one’s gonna cost ya.
SKINNER: Why, what else do you know?
MULDER: Oh, I don’t know anything. But you know me, I got a real big hunch.

He tells them that Salt was a multiple abductee that worked for the census bureau. He wanted to get word to the
president—unspecified grievances. He asks them what they want to be the grievances were. Scully guesses that he thinks Salt knew something. Mulder tells her that he thinks they killed him for it. Skinner tells him that he jumped the white house fence and had a gun. Mulder tells him that he’s a betting man, and he’s betting that he had more than that. Scully tells him that he makes it sound like it’s a conspiracy, and he says, “Ooh, there’s that word again.”

Skinner tells him that he’s being paranoid, even for him. Mulder tells him that if the FBI gets it’s way, there will be no one down there to ask the paranoid questions, and no body to find the faces in the photographs, and surely not Agent Doggett.

Absalom makes Doggett lay on his stomach and he duct tapes a gun to his bare back.

FBI EVIDENCE ROOM
9:48 PM

Scully follows Mulder into the evidence room. He is looking for Salt’s personal belongings. She warns him that if anything leaves the room, he could be in violation of the law. He tells her that when he was dead he was really hoping they would have changed the rules. She tells him that just him being there could give Kersh cause for his dismissal. He tells her then that she should shut the door so he doesn’t find out.

When Mulder finds Salt’s belongings, he starts to look through the first box. He pulls out a laptop and boots it up. There is something on it that is taking up all ten gigabytes of the hard drive. He opens the file, but it’s been encrypted. He pulls the hard drive portion out of the laptop. Scully takes it from him and tells him that she will book it for him.

FEDERAL STATISTICS CENTER
CRYSTAL CITY, VIRGINIA
1:11 AM

Absalom takes Doggett with him to get into the census archives. The security guard lets them in after Doggett shows him his badge, but after they walk through the x-ray scan, the guard sees the gun on Doggett’s back. Doggett tells Absalom that they won’t get far because of that.

Guards approach Absalom and Doggett. Absalom yells that he’s got a gun pointed at Doggett’s head. Doggett yells at them to stop, but one of the guards shoots Absalom in the head, killing him instantly.

ACT THREE
Skinner talks to Doggett. He asks him about what happened, and about Absalom’s claim that the man had census
data—information that he was after that was connected to Salt. Doggett says that Absalom said it was proof that THEY are here among us, and adds “whoever THEY are.”

Mulder enters Skinner’s office. He asks if he is Agent Doggett. Doggett stands up to shake Mulder’s hand, but to his surprise, Mulder pushes him back into his seat. Mulder yells to Skinner that he hopes he’s not commending him as a hero for what he did—he got Absalom killed because of what he knew and what he was going to expose. Doggett points to the big scratch on his face and asks if Mulder sees it. Mulder tells him that he sees him sitting there, and that is enough for him.

Once Mulder has left the office, Skinner tells Doggett that he has to think about what Mulder’s been through, and now he finds him there. Doggett gets up and leaves before Skinner can finish.

Mulder comes into Scully’s apartment. He is first met by Frohike, who tells him that it’s not fair. Mulder has been dead for months but he still looks better than him. He hugs Mulder and adds, “but not by much.” Mulder laughs and jokingly tells him that he would be a whole lot happier if he would take his hands off of his ass. Frohike quickly apologizes and backs away.

Mulder walks over to the other lone gunmen, who are also glad that he is alive.

BYERS: I think it goes without saying that we’re all, uh, tremendously relieved.
LANGLY: And not just because we have been questions about your involvement in a certain “blessed event.”
LANGLY motions towards SCULLY’S pregnant stomach.

Scully tells him that they were able to decrypt what they found on Salt’s hard drive--a series of file directories that were downloaded the day that he died from the Federal Statistics Center.

Langly tells him that even to hack into it, they at least need a password. Without that, he can’t do anything. He says that they all agree that he is going to have to let this one go. Mulder looks at Scully and says that someone’s been doing a little campaigning for her cause. Mulder tells the lone gunmen just to remember that it may be America, but just because you get more votes, doesn’t mean that you win.

Doggett is outside when he meets with a man in a hooded sweatshirt. It is Nole, the man that he talked to in the past (see “Per Manum”). He gives Doggett some information. When Doggett tells him to tell him something that he doesn’t know, Noel says, “Three words.”

Scully is about to get into a cab when Doggett runs up and stops her. He tells her that he has something for Mulder, but he can’t give it to him himself because Mulder doesn’t trust him. He tells her that he has information about the convict who took him hostage. He says that Salt had a computer diskette that he was trying to get to the president. He won’t tell Scully where he got the information, but what he does say is that the diskette was labeled with a pass code: “Fight the Future.”

When Scully walks into her apartment, Mulder is already there. He senses that she knows something. Scully isn’t exactly sure she should tell him what happened.

ACT FOUR

Skinner comes to Doggett’s apartment. He tells him that he got a call from Scully who was completely beside herself. He says that Mulder somehow got access to a computer database that is filled with secrets—names of people the government is tracking using the U.S. census. The people all have a certain genetic profile. Mulder believes that it is the same information the shooter at the white house and Absalom knew about. Doggett says that he said that Scully was upset. Skinner tells him it is because she is afraid that Mulder is going to act on this information in some way. Skinner stops when he notices the look on Doggett’s face. He asks Doggett if he knew about it. He tells him that he gave Scully the password. Skinner wants to know where he got it, but he won’t tell him. Skinner tells him that he’s starting to wonder whose side he’s on. Doggett says that he’s starting to worry about that himself.

Doggett asks what Scully’s apartment number is, but Skinner tells him that he already calls and can’t get a hold of either of them and he doesn’t know where they went.

Doggett puts on his coat and goes to leave. Skinner asks him where he is going, and he tells him that he can’t tell him that either. If he opens his mouth he will be putting him at risk. He tells Skinner that he will have to trust him. Doggett then leaves.

FEDERAL STATISTICS CENTER
CRYSTAL CITY, VIRGINIA

Scully is sitting alone in her car when Doggett walks up. She tells him that Mulder wouldn’t listen. He tells her that she needs to leave. She tells him that she can’t do that for Mulder, so he tells her then to do it for herself. He thinks that a man set them up.

Doggett runs away, leaving Scully to try to call him back.

The Lone Gunmen are trying to bypass the system so Mulder can get to the archives.

Mulder walks past the guard when the phone rings. Langly’s override command works and the doors open for Mulder.

Meanwhile, Doggett is inside looking for Mulder.

Mulder finally gets into the data bank with the help of his friends. He sits down at a computer and gets to work. He puts in the password and gets into the system.

MULDER: Let’s do some emailing.

Doggett sees Mulder inside the locked room and starts pounding on the glass for Mulder to get out of there, or his life will be in danger. He ignores him. Frohike asks him what the sounds are coming from. He tells him that it’s just a fly buzzing around the window.

Finally Doggett shoots the glass door so he can get inside. He tells Mulder that he is trying to save him, no matter what he may thing. Mulder says that he thinks that he is trying to stop the information from ever seeing the light of day.

Doggett tells him that he doesn’t even know what the information is. Mulder says that he’s about to, along with a lot of other people. They are going to know that they’ve been targeted because of their genetic profiles for abduction and replacement by alien facsimiles.

Doggett says that he can believe whatever he wants, but the information is never going to make it out of there. He sarcastically asks if he’s going to shoot him.

Outside, Scully calls the lone gunmen because she sees people going inside. She tells them that she thinks that Mulder has been set up and they need to get him out of there. Byers tells her that that is basically impossible.

Frohike tells Mulder that he better type fast, because the cavalry has arrived. Mulder turns to Doggett, saying that he set him up. He tells Mulder that he didn’t. Doggett pulls Mulder by the arm but he pushes him away as he continues to type. He tells Mulder that if he set him up, he wouldn’t be trying to get him out of there. They are going to kill both of them and that is the setup.

Langly tells Mulder that he better listen to Doggett. The data is trapped and he can’t get it uploaded, let alone start transmission.

Byers tells them that there is only one way out that isn’t good, but it’s better then the alternative.

As the men come into the room, the ceiling panel above them slides shut, unnoticed.

Doggett meets with Nole again. He tells him to give him a reason why he shouldn’t put his name up in lights and expose him.  Nole tells him that it was nice knowing him, and then starts to walk away.

Doggett stops him by showing him where Skinner is. He tells him that if he walks he will put his name on all the wrong desks. Nole tells him that he gets it. He says that Doggett asks him for information and he tells him what he can. What he does with it is out of his hands. Doggett tells him that he knew what he would do with it, and that is why he gave it to him.  Nole asks him what he is going to do and where he is going to get his answers if he exposes him. He says that Doggett is standing on the tip of the iceberg.

Doggett tells him that he is full of crap, and Nole questions this. He asks him what it is that he thinks that they are trying to protect. He needs him worse then he knows. Doggett tells him that he doesn’t need someone using him to get another man killed. Nole guesses that he thinks that it is about Mulder, but it is about the truth. Doggett asks what truth, and he tells him that he’s got it all right in front of him in the X-Files. He’s just one man trying to point him in the right direction.

Doggett walks away and Nole watches him leave. The camera pans to show the back of his neck. There is a big lump there, possibly an implant.
