TEASER
In Ellicott, New York, Gary Sacks arrives at his father, Arlen’s, house. Arlen is in a wheelchair. Gary wants Arlen in the hospital, but his father doesn’t.

When Gary leaves the room, the beep of Arlen’s heart monitor starts to quicken as he hears a soft rattling sound. Arlen quietly utters, “Gary, you didn’t!”

Gary takes his food out of the microwave when he hears the solid beep telling him that his father flat-lined.

Gary runs in and turns off the heart monitor. His father is not there.

Gary hears the same rattling sound as his father did. Suddenly a creature jumps at him, spraying him in the face with something.

ACT ONE
In the X-Files office, Scully is cleaning out Mulder’s desk of her things. The first thing that she pulls out is a flashlight. Next she takes out the fused dime and penny (from “Dreamland”). She turns it over in her hand and then puts it down. Next she pulls out Queeque’s old dog tag.

Doggett enters the office. He asks Scully if he can take her coat. She tells him that she isn’t staying. Her doctor told her to begin her maternity leave.

Scully pulls something else out and tells Doggett that she wants him to have it. She then hands Doggett the Apollo 11 key chain that Mulder gave to her a few years before. She tells him that it symbolizes teamwork and partnership, and that no one gets there alone. She then tells him that she wouldn’t still be there if it wasn’t for him.

Scully then gives Doggett a hug and pulls back.

Doggett wants to make sure that Scully is just taking a pregnancy leave and is coming back eventually. When he asks her this, she just gives him a sad smile and walks out.

A few seconds later, Doggett hears footsteps heading towards the office. He calls to whom he thinks is Scully that she’s not even been gone five minutes and he already feels like a stranger in his own office.

When Doggett turns around, he sees that it is not Scully, but rather another female agent.

The agent introduces herself as Leyla Harrison and tells him that she has an X-File for him. He was not aware, but she tells him that she is his new partner.

Harrison tells him that the case is of a murder in upstate New York, and that she booked them a flight to Buffalo Niagara.

Ellicott, New York
10:47 AM

Doggett and Leyla arrive at the scene. Leyla tells him that they asked for the body to be sent to D.C. The man was found in the woods about fifty yards beyond the house. She tells him that maybe they should begin there. He tells her that they’ll start inside of the house.

Leyla goes on to tell Doggett about the murder victim. The deceased is Arlen Sacks, age 72. He was the caretaker for the estate on which the house is situated.

She tells him that there were no signs of physical trauma, but the local PD suspects homicide because of the dumping of the body. Arlen was confined to a wheelchair for the last few months and was cared for by his son Gary, who is the chief suspect. Doggett asks why, and she tells him that Gary is missing too.

Doggett tells her that if he killed the man without leaving any marks, that would suggest premeditation. The attempt to disguise the murder does not fit with dumping the body and fleeing the scene, both of which indicated panic and haste.

Leyla tells him that that is great, and then asks him to repeat part of it so she can write it down.

Doggett is kneeling on the ground when he finds some slime. There as also a small streak on the floor on the other side of the room too.

Leyla jumps in, saying that that means that it was not someone but rather something. She’s happy that it really is an X-Files. Doggett just sarcastically tells her congratulations.

Outside, Leyla comes up to Doggett. She tells him that she gave the slime to the Buffalo PD and told them that they want to see the results right away.

Doggett asks her how much field experience she has had. She tells him that it is her first time in the field. Kersh sent her. Doggett tells her that she is being used by Kersh—he is no friend of the X-Files.

She tells him that he doesn’t understand. She begged for the assignment. She worked in accounting and processed Mulder and Scully’s traveling expenses. He sarcastically tells her then, that she is qualified. She tells him that she may not be qualified, but she knows everything about the X-Files. He gets to face the same kind of stuff everyday. She tells him that she is so excited and assumes that he is. He doesn’t respond.

Doggett finds more slime on the ground. Leyla tells him that it could be bile from a liver-eating mutant. Mulder and Scully chased one into the escalator once, but it died. Doggett, thinking she is nuts, tells her that that is not what it is. She then tells him that it could be an alien who shed his skin. Mulder wrote in his report that they leave a mucus like residue. Doggett just gives her a look, and she says that he must not think that it is that either.

She tells him that she will take another sample and have it sent to the lab for comparison.

Leyla leaves and the camera pans behind Doggett. Not to far off a creature, that appears to have the tail of a snake, rattles, appearing to be watching Doggett.

Mulder comes to pick up Scully. She tells him that she has to get her keys. In the mean time, Mulder tells her not to forget her pillow, and he playfully shoves it under his shirt like he’s pregnant. He tells her that she needs it to relax her back when she breathes in and out. Mulder then starts making shallow breathing like he’s in labor.

She asks her how he knows all of that. He says that he’s unemployed now and has a lot of time on his hands. Then he adds that he watches a lot of Oprah.

Scully thanks him for doing it with her.

Mulder notices that something is going on and asks her what is wrong. She tells him that she doesn’t know, maybe it’s just her hormones, but she is feeling strange.  He asks her if she means about the pregnancy. She tells him that she means she feels strange about leaving work. She feels like a deserter. He tells her that she has more than paid her dues, and then guesses that she is concerned about Doggett. She says that Doggett always watched her back.

Mulder tells her that Doggett can take care of himself—he’s a big boy, and that she needs to worry about the little boy, or little girl. He repeats the question ‘boy or girl?’, but she just smiles and doesn’t answer him.

Doggett walks through a house. Inside all of the furniture has been covered in plastic. He lifts the cover off of the desk. He picks up a book, entitled, The Sixth Extinction, by Robert Leakey. On the inside it is signed to Herman Stites, and says, “May you find what you seek.”

The camera pans the hallway behind Doggett. Someone or something is there.

Doggett slowly pulls out his gun and looks. Leyla walks into the room. He tells her that it’s in the house. He wants her to take her gun and wait outside. He is going to try to flush it out, and for her to shoot it. She agrees, but is obviously nervous. As soon as she starts to walk away he calls her back, and tells her to take the safety off of the gun.

Leyla is standing outside when above her she hears rattling sounds. Something jumps down at her as she fires.

Inside Doggett hears the gunshots and runs outside. He doesn’t see Leyla anywhere, but he sees a kind of worn path on the ground that he follows into the woods.

Doggett stops when he hears what sounds like footsteps below him. Suddenly he falls through the ground and a trap door closes behind him.

ACT TWO
A group of agents, led by Skinner, are covering the scene, looking everywhere for signs of Agent Doggett, but to no avail.

Suddenly Skinner’s cell phone rings. It’s Scully calling from her apartment. She asks him if it is true that Doggett is missing. He tells her that Doggett was investigating a murder and did not report back.

Scully wants to come out and help, but he tells her that they are doing everything possible to find him. She knows that they are, but asks him, “What if it’s not enough?” Scully then hangs up the phone.

Underground, Doggett wakes up, not knowing what he is at. He pulls out his flashlight and gun and starts to look around. He looks down at his Nokia phone, which tells him that he has no service.

Scully is at the morgue, against Skinner’s advice. Mulder arrives. He tells her that he got away from his tour group, and then shows her his visitor pass.

MULDER: Seems like old times. You in scrubs, slicing and dicing.

Scully tells Mulder what she found out in the autopsy. Arlen died of heart failure after he was blinded by a chemical substance—hydrolytic enzymes. Mulder tells her that it is venom, produced by reptiles. She asks him how he knows that already. He tells her that Skinner told him that Doggett and his partner sent samples of it before then went missing.

Scully tells him that they also found bacteria in the venom and that she is going to do a culture on it. He tells her to let someone else do it, because she has other concerns. She tells him that she knows that, but Skinner wouldn’t be able to find someone else that is qualified. Mulder tells her that he knows somewhere that he can.

Doggett finds a gate that he breaks through. He keeps walking until he finds something that he picks up. It’s a head of a dog, or rather a shell of a head of a dog.  He puts it back on the ground.

He hears a rattling noise. What appears to be a reptile of some kind comes at him. He shoots, but before he can hit it, it sprays him in the eyes with its venom.

Harrison walks out to Doggett. She was sprayed too. Neither of them can see very well.

Leyla leads Doggett to Gary Sacks. He is alive but not moving.

Doggett asks Leyla how she got there, and she tells him that she thinks that she was dragged down.

She tells him that Mulder and Scully investigated a case once with subterranean men who took people underground. Doggett tells her that it’s not a man. He fell through the trap door, and thinks that someone put it there to provide live meals for the thing. He tells her that cellars were built by bootleggers during the Prohibition, and that it must lead back to the house.

Leyla and Doggett look way up at the trap door that Doggett fell through. They can’t tell how far up it is because their visions are so blurred.

4:47 PM
Mulder arrives to help Skinner, who tells him that he is not supposed to be out there. Mulder just answers him by saying that he isn’t out there. Skinner tells him that they found Doggett’s car parked at a convenience store about a half-hour from there. They don’t know how it got there, but they are redirecting the search.

Mulder starts to leave when Skinner asks him where he is going. He tells him that he is taking a walk in the woods. Skinner tells him that they have already done that, but he just that it doesn’t matter because he’s out of a job already anyway.

Doggett does his best to climb the wall to get up to the trap door. He’s almost there when the scene changes to show Mulder walking nearby.

Mulder finds the Apollo 11 key chain on the ground and pockets it.

Stites, the owner of the property sees Mulder and comes out to him. He tells Mulder that he thought that everyone was gone. Mulder introduces himself as Kersh and asks him if he has seen anything unusual or any dangerous animals or reptiles. He tells him that he is a biologist, so he knows something about animals, and that they don’t generally carry people into the woods.

Mulder tells him that he doesn’t think that it was an animal. He thinks that it is somebody using some kind of reptile venom to blind them first. He tells Mulder that that would be quite the trick. Mulder tells him that the person would really have to know what they were doing, and would have to be someone like a scientist.  Stites asks Mulder if he is accusing him. He tells Stites that he is just thinking out loud.

Mulder walks away.

Meanwhile, Doggett slips and falls partway back down.

Doggett finally gets back to the grate at the top and opens it. Stites sees him and walks over. Doggett tells him that he needs a hand, but instead of helping him he steps on his fingers until Doggett lets go and falls back down again.

ACT THREE
Leyla asks Doggett what happened. He tells her he lost his grip, with a little help from the man upstairs. She asks him why they would want to keep them down there. Doggett tells her that she wanted to face the unknown. They’re facing it now. She asks him who the man was. He tells her that he thinks that the man is some kind of scientist. He saw some books and papers on biology in his library.

Leyla tells him that it could be some kind of symbiotic relationship between the man and the creature. She starts to say something about Mulder and Scully, but Doggett cuts her off. He tells her that Mulder and Scully aren’t there, they are, and that wild speculations aren’t going to help them find a way out. She thinks that he thinks that she is foolish. He tells her that he appreciations her enthusiasm, but she’s taking leaps that aren’t supported by facts.

He tells her to stay with Gary while he looks for another way out. He tells her to shoot it if it comes near her.

Harrison goes back to find that Gary’s body is not there. She tells Doggett and says to him that it must have taken him.

Mulder is staking out Stites place, spitting seeds out of the car window. Suddenly his cell phone rings. It’s Scully. She tells him that Skinner said that Stites called and said that he impersonated Kersh and was making baseless accusations. He asks her what Skinner is mad about—the fact that he was impersonating Kersh, or the fact that he was harassing Stites.

Scully mentions the venom that Arlen had in his eyes. Mulder asks her if she’s saying that they think it is a man who did it. She tells him that she knows that it is hard to believe that she is saying it, but only a reptile attack is consistent with the evidence.

Mulder says that she regifted. He tells her that he found his Apollo medallion on the grass on Stites estate, so Doggett must be around somewhere.

The woman in the morgue wants to show Scully something, so she hangs up with Mulder.

The woman shows her the screen of the bacteria that she cultured. Scully tells her that it looks like it is breaking down the tissue. The woman tells her that she is right, and that it blinds its victims and then excretes digestive enzymes throughout the victim’s body. It takes all of the bones and muscles and liquefies them for easier digestion. The skin becomes hard and brittle, forming a sack or shell that the reptile can drink from. Scully says then that after it sprays its victim, all it has to do is wait. She also tells the woman that no species could do all of that—at least not yet. The woman asks her what she means, but she doesn’t answer her.

Leyla holds on to Doggett as he walks along, feeling the walls, and looking.

DOGGETT: Talk about the blind leading the blind.

Leyla tells him that she owes him an apology. He tells her that she’s doing fine. She tells him that he was right. She isn’t qualified. Doggett just tells her that they are going to find a way out. She tells him that she doesn’t think she is. She thinks that whatever was happening to Sacks is happening to her. She is completely blind now.

Both of them hear rattling noises. Doggett sees the creature and shoots at it, but he misses.

As he keeps going he finds a door that is locked.

Leyla calls him back over to see what she found. She tells him that she thinks that it is Gary. The camera pans down to show the bloody shell of Gary.

Mulder is still sitting in his car when his cell phone rings again. She tells him that he was right. Stites is a cryptobiologist, and his specialty is in reptile genetics. He also published a monograph that said that he was on the verge of creating a new species of reptiles. Mulder asks her if she thinks that he succeeded. She tells him that she doesn’t know. He dropped out of existence before he could publish anything else. She tells him though, that if Stites is genetically altering reptiles breeds, that may explain the peculiar properties that they found.

Mulder sees something moving in the woods and realizes that it is the reptile. He tells Scully that Stites might have a lot more than that to explain.

Mulder gets out of the car and runs into Stites’s yard. He watches as the creature climbs onto Stites’s roof.

Mulder rushes over to Stites door and starts pounding on it and yelling for him.

Inside the house, the creature slithers down the stairs, slowly morphing into Stites.

ACT FOUR
Stites opens the door. Mulder looks around demanding to know where it is. He tells him that he knows that he is protecting the creature. Mulder tells him that he may not know it but it got out and attacked people. He wants to know where they are.

Doggett walks over to Leyla and lets her know that it is him. He tells her that it doesn’t make any sense because there is no exit except for the door.

Suddenly Doggett hears knocking on the door, followed by Mulder’s voice, which is calling him.

Stites and Mulder stand in the doorway. Doggett tells Mulder that the man has been protecting the creature and keeping them down there. Mulder tells him that he already knows.

Leyla suddenly says, “It’s him.” She says that he is not protecting the creature, because he *is* the creature.

Mulder turns to where Stites was standing, and sure enough, he is gone. The door is also locked.

They all hear the rattling sound again. Mulder tells Doggett that he doesn’t have a weapon so he is coming to get his. He sees the creature and changes his mind.

Doggett tells Mulder that he can’t see. Mulder tells him that it right above him and coming this way. He tells Doggett to aim down. He then tells him to aim at the sound of his voice. Doggett yells at him that he won’t because he can’t see. Mulder just keeps telling him to aim at him and fire when he tells him to.

Just as the creature launches itself at Mulder, he tells Doggett to shoot, which he does.

Doggett calls for Mulder, who walks up behind him and tells him that he is right there.

They look down as the creature changes back into Stites.

WASHINGTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Doggett walks in and Scully calls him over. Smiling he asks if ‘this is it,’ meaning time for the baby. She and Mulder chuckle and tells him no. They just came to visit Leyla. They ask how she is.

Doggett tells them that she is on the same anti-venom treatment he was on, and that the doctors say that she is going to be fine. They tell Doggett that she’s not returning to the X-Files. He knows it, and says that it was her choice. It will just be him for a while.

Mulder tells Doggett that he wants to return something to him that he thinks that he deserves to keep. Mulder pulls out the Apollo medallion and hands it to Doggett.

Doggett tells them that he appreciates the gesture, but all the same he thinks that there is someone else who should have it.

Leyla is sitting up in her bed holding the medallion. She tells them that she can’t tell them how much it means to her. She then asks Mulder if she can ask him something.

LEYLA: When you went to Antarctica to save Agent Scully from being taken by that spaceship and you ran out of gas in your snowcat, how did you get back?
MULDER stares, not knowing what to say
SCULLY: Um, well, first of all it was never actually proven that it was a spaceship.
MULDER: It wasn’t?!
SCULLY: Well, no, what…
MULDER (who continues to talk at the same time she does): It wasn’t?!
SCULLY: What, what happened was that we fell off of something that…
MULDER: Something?
SCULLY: …Rose out of the ice.
MULDER: What do you think that was?
SCULLY: Well, I don’t know what it was, but we never, we didn’t actually see…
MULDER: Was it a spaceship?
SCULLY: …A spaceship.
MULDER: I can’t believe you’re saying it’s not a spaceship, when you saw it.
SCULLY: Ah, I mean, it could have been a spaceship. Mulder, but you don’t…
MULDER: Of course it was a spaceship.
SCULLY: Look, we don’t know that it was, but you don’t have a picture of it or anything.
MULDER: You know it was a spaceship, you saw it!
SCULLY: No, I did, no no no no no. Remember, I was unconscious. And when I woke up there was no spaceship.
MULDER: You saw the spaceship.
SCULLY: No no no.
The camera pans out of the room to show DOGGETT watching them bicker
SCULLY: …And you were frozen and I remember I hugged you…

Outside the door, Doggett turns, looking as if he feels like he doesn’t belong, and walks out.
