TEASER
Cath Haskle lays in a hospital bed ready to have her baby. Her husband Duffy is sitting next to her.

The baby’s heart monitor starts acting up, and the doctors tell her that they must do an emergency C-section. The mother is worried about the baby, but they tell her that they will take care of it and it will be fine.

The doctor tells Duffy that he has to scrub in if he wants to stay with her. He walks out of the room, telling the doctors not to wait for him. Once he is out of the room, a nurse locks the door behind him.

The doctor injects Kath with something. She wants to know what’s going on.

The doctor cuts out the baby and tells her that it’s fine. She asks if it’s a boy or a girl, but he doesn’t answer her. He tells the nurse to put her back under. Kath is still yelling, but she is knocked out.

The doctor cuts the umbilical cord and then goes to clean off the baby. The camera pans up to show that the baby is not human, but alien.

ACT ONE
Scully is standing in her bedroom in front of her mirror. She is looking at her profile to see if people can tell that she is pregnant. She places her hand over her stomach and starts to cry.

Duffy Haskle comes to the office. He tells Scully and Doggett that he had contacted Mulder eight years ago about his wife’s multiple abductions. She just gave birth to an alien baby and then was killed. Scully tells him to start at the beginning.

Haskle tells them that when Kath was abducted they did procedures on her. One of them gave her cancer and another cured it. Another time they impregnated her with an alien embryo.

Scully asks him if he has any medical proof. He shows her his wife’s ultrasound and says that anyone can see that it is bazaar, especially since she couldn’t conceive, but no one will admit to that.

Scully asks him if he means that he thinks the doctors killed his wife. He tells her that they did because of the baby, which they stole from her.

Scully tells him that they will be in touch.

Haskle leaves.

Scully sarcastically thanks Doggett, telling him that the rest of her afternoon couldn’t be more amusing than that. He says that he thought she would be interested. She knows the story. He tells her that Kath had cancer and then went through remission.  He says that that is her own story, except for the pregnancy.

Scully tells him that she appreciates his thoroughness and familiarity with The X-Files, but her personal files are her personal files. He agrees with her.

Scully leaves and enters the elevator.

The camera pans to show Scully’s memory:

The door opens and Mulder enters the elevator. Scully is obviously upset. He wants to know what’s wrong. She tells him that she doesn’t know why she hasn’t told him, because he was always there for her during her illness. When she was abducted she was left unable to conceive from whatever tests they did, and she is not ready to accept the fact that she can’t have children.

The elevator door opens and Mulder steps into the hall.

Mulder tells her that he has something that he has not told her, and he hopes that she will forgive him and understand why he didn’t tell her before. When he was investigating into her illness he found out why she was left barren. He found out that her ova were stored in the government facility. He immediately took them to a specialist to tell him if they were okay. He didn’t tell her because she was very sick and he didn’t want to give her any more bad news. She asks him if that’s what it was--bad news. He tells her that the doctor said that they weren’t viable. She tells him that she wants a second opinion.

Mulder stops the door from closing for a second, but then with a sad look, he lets it go.

When the elevator doors reopen Doggett is there. He asks Scully what she is doing. Brought out of her thoughts, she tells him that she must have forgot to hit the button.

Doggett tells her that he isn’t sure what she wanted him to do about the case. She tells him that there is nothing to do.

ZEUS GENETICS
GERMANTOWN, MARYLAND

Scully goes into the hospital where Haskle said that his wife was killed. No one is there. Everything around her is white and looks so pure, but the hospital is not what it appears to be.

Scully walks around the hospital to see what she can find out.

Scully finds a room with people inside. She looks through the window and sees doctors yelling at a pregnant woman. The one doctor heads towards the door, so she runs away.

Scully runs into an empty room and shuts the door. When she looks around her she sees jars along the walls filled with a yellow-orange liquid. Inside each jar is one or two dead bodies of deformed babies.

Suddenly one of the doctors comes into the room. He tells her that she can’t be there and asks why she is there. She tells him that she is there with a friend. He asks if she means Mary Hendershot, and she tells him that she does. He says that she must wait for her up front.

Scully comes into her apartment. She sits down at her laptop to look up the phone number of her doctor. She calls Dr. James Parenti and asks him to compare an ultrasound that she has with her own.

The scene changes to show her doctor. Behind him are the jars of babies.

Parenti hangs up the phone.

He starts to unwrap gauze from around a dead baby. He reveals the alien baby.

ACT TWO
Scully has another flashback:

Scully is talking with Dr. Parenti. He tells her that there is a good chance that they can get her pregnant. It’s not out of the realm of possibility if they start soon. Scully is very surprised, but very happy. She asks if they can start right away. He says that they can but she needs a father first. He can get her genetic counseling to find an anonymous donor if she wants, unless she has someone already in mind. She says that she does. She just needs to figure out how to ask him.

Scully is brought back to the present when Dr. Parenti calls her in.

Dr. Parenti tells her that he doesn’t know what he is supposed to be looking for. The ultrasound shows a healthy baby, as does hers. She questions that he doesn’t see anything strange. He tells her he doesn’t and asks her why she’s asking. She just says that she just wants to be sure--she has had complications.

He tells her that she is going to have to tell the FBI soon, because she is going to start to show. Scully gives him a little smile.

When Scully comes into the office Doggett is on the phone. When he hangs up he tells her that it was Dr. Parenti. She left some ultrasounds there. She tells him that she isn’t working on the case, and that Parenti is her doctor. He tells her that he knows that they are the ultrasounds that Haskle left. Dr. Parenti was one of the doctors that Haskle consulted with.

Scully sarcastically asks him if he is investigating her. He tells her that he was investigating Haskle until she told him to drop the case. She tells him that she didn’t tell him to drop it, just that there was nothing to do.

Doggett says that it is hard to do his job when she is keeping secrets and lies. She just tells him that she is not investigating these people. Parenti is her doctor. She asks him why that is so strange to him. He tells her that it’s not, but Duffy Haskle is a piece of work.

Scully and Doggett are with Haskle and Skinner in his office. Skinner is saying that Haskle is from the Ohio Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) and had sent Mulder threat letters. Haskle tells him that no one would believe him. Skinner says that Haskle threatened to kill Dr. Lev if he killed his wife. Haskle tells him that Dr. Lev killed his wife and stole the baby.

Skinner tells him that he can’t even find documentation of his marriage.

The doctor is a specialist in birth defects, and his peers have given him the highest regards. Allegations aside, it is a crime to threaten people.

Haskle looks to Scully, asking if she believes him. She doesn’t answer.

Skinner tells him that if he continues to threaten people he will enter his name into the system as a dangerous individual.

Haskle says that the doctor took everything from him away, and that there are other women like Kath.

Haskle walks into the elevator and makes a phone call to Zeus Genetics. He talks to the doctor that killed his wife and tells him that they are poking holes in his theories. He tells Haskle that they knew they would. He tells the doctor that the risk losing Hendershot now. The doctor tells him then that it is time to let her go.

In the reflection of the doctor’s goggles, an alien baby can be seen.

Scully is in her apartment again. He is holding her hand on her stomach and looks down at it.

In a flashback:

Scully lets Mulder into her apartment. She offers to take his coat, but he tells her that he can't stay, because he needs to get back to the office.

Scully says that he's had time to think about her request. He tells her that it's not something that he gets asked to do everyday, but he's absolutely flattered. She tells him that if he's politely trying to say “no,” that it's okay; she understands. He tells her that he knows it sounds weird, but he just doesn't want it to come between them. Thinking that he is saying “no,” she tells him again that she understands. Instead he says:

MULDER: But, the answer is yes.

Mulder smiles at Scully and she smiles back, moved to tears. She hugs him tight. They are both really happy.

Scully pulls away.

SCULLY: I'll uh…well, I'll call Dr. Parenti, and then I assume that he'll wanna meet you, and, and go through the uh donor procedures.
MULDER: No, at that part, I'm a pro.

Mulder walks to the door and opens it, looking back at her before he leaves.

Scully is once again pulled from her thoughts as she hears a knock on the door.

Scully answers it and finds Mary Hendershot there. She tells Scully that her baby is in danger and so is Scully’s.

ACT THREE
DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON D.C.
3:33 AM

Doggett pulls up to a diner and then gets out of his truck and goes inside.

Doggett orders his coffee black and then sits down with Scully and Skinner.

He asks Scully is she is going somewhere, and she tells him that she is. Skinner tells him that as their superior, Scully came to him asking for a leave of absence. Doggett asks her if he can ask why, and she tells him “No.” Doggett asks if he’ll be the only one on The X-Files now. Skinner tells him that Scully is not quitting; she is just going away. Doggett thanks them for calling him. He tells Scully to drop him a line if she gets a chance.

After Doggett walks out, Skinner tells her that she should tell him, but she says that she can’t.

Scully walks outside and stops Doggett. Skinner watches as she tells him that she wants him to understand something. He asks her if she means the secrets or the lies. She says that she told him that she isn’t doing anything behind his back. He says that she is supposed to watch his back. She tells him that if she were putting him at risk she wouldn’t let him down. She hopes he knows that. He tells her that he only knows what she tells him.

Scully turns to Skinner and says that she has to go. She then walks to her car and gets in.

Doggett sees Mary Hendershot in her car and asks Skinner who the woman is. He tells her that he doesn’t know.

WALDEN-FREEDMAN
ARMY RESEARCH HOSPITAL
5:01 AM

Scully and Mary go into the hospital. They are met by Dr. Miryum who tells them that they have the best obstetricians there.  She tells Scully to tell the other doctors standing there what she told her on the phone.

Scully tells them that Mary believes that the baby is not her own. Somehow at forty weeks she is going to give birth to something inhuman. One of the doctors asks if they have any records. Mary tells him that she can’t trust her doctors. Scully tells them that she is in danger—women are being murdered at childbirth. Dr. Miryum tells them that Scully is not only there as an FBI agent, but also as a doctor.

She tells them that they will have Mary prepped. They are going to make sure that she has the baby safely, and then they will worry about what it is.

She asks how Mary found Scully. Scully tells her that Duffy Haskle lead her to her. His wife is dead. She then tells the doctor that it is not only Mary who is in danger.

An agent comes into the office to talk to Doggett. He ran Haskle’s fingerprints for him. Doggett tells him that the case is closed. The agent says that it has been closed since 1970. The prints matched a David Haskle who died during that year.  He tells Doggett that he has himself a real spook. Doggett tells him that it’s either that or a snake in the grass.

Back at the hospital Mary is lying in bed when she asks Scully how long it will take. She tells her that it will take four to twelve hours. She tells Scully that all her life she wanted a baby and now she is afraid of what is in her and what really happened. Scully asks her if she means getting pregnant. Mary tells her that she had a boyfriend, but she checked the dates.  There is no way she could have gotten pregnant from him, so she is sure of what is inside her and that she was abducted.

Dr. Miryum comes into the room and tells Scully that they are ready for her.

The doctor starts to give Scully and ultrasound. She says that the baby is about eight centimeters and looks healthy at fourteen weeks. She asks her if she wants to know the sex, but Scully just tells her that she just wants to know if the baby is okay.

The doctor tells her that it is a little early but she can give her an amnio if she wants. Scully agrees.

Doggett talks to an old friend of his, Nole, that works in the government. Doggett had asked him to find out about the fingerprints. Nole says to take a walk with him.

Nole asks Doggett how he hooked up with Haskle. He tells him that he came to the office. The military records show that he died in 1970. Nole tells him that he could be intelligence. Doggett tells him that he doesn’t believe the alien crap, but that if he is CIA he was not just in their office killing time.

Nole sarcastically asks him if he thinks it’s an alien conspiracy. He tells him that it’s not his work but his partner Scully’s.  Nole tells him to give him until the end of the day.

The doctor has given Scully the amnio. She tells her that she probably knows it already, but she needs to take it easy. The baby could become at risk if the membrane would rupture.

The doctor leaves the room.

Scully notices something. She carefully gets off of the examination table and looks underneath the television screen. There is a VCR that is playing a tape. She stops it and ejects it. The label says that it is the ultrasound of Nancy Boxwell from November 23, 2000.

Scully goes into Mary’s room and tells her that they need to leave.

ACT FOUR
FBI HEADQUARTERS
8:26 PM

Doggett goes to talk to Skinner. He tells him that they have been misled by Haskle who set them up from the start to get Scully to go wherever it is she went. Skinner tells him that Scully is safe in a hospital, but he won’t tell Doggett where.  Doggett tells him that it involves doctors who may be killing pregnant women. A hospital could be the worst play for her to be. Skinner finally tells Doggett where she is. He tells Skinner to call the hospital and tell them everything that he just told him.

At the hospital, Dr. Miryum is running down the hall, shouting that two patients are missing.

Scully and Mary are almost out when they are stopped by some men. One is Nole. He tells Scully that he is a friend of Doggett’s, and that they need to follow them. Scully asks him who he is, but he just tells her that it’s not important. They just need to get out of there and get to the closest hospital because Mary is in labor. Scully is also in pain, and shouldn’t even be up.

Nole sees car lights following them and tells the driver to turn off the road.

Mary is going to have her baby any second. Scully tells Nole that they have to stop now or they could be endangering Mary’s life.

They stop and lay Mary down in the back of the van. Scully goes to deliver the baby, but Nole tells her that she shouldn’t be doing that and she needs to stay safe. Scully doesn’t agree, so he grabs her and holds her. She starts to yell for him to let go.  She is injected with a sedative. She falls asleep as the baby is born, before she can see what it looks like.

Scully wakes up in the hospital to see Doggett across the room. She asks him why she is back in the hospital and why he is there. He tells her that she is okay, and so is her baby. He tells her that she is very lucky.

Scully asks him about Mary Hendershot. He tells her that she had a baby boy that weighed six pounds and eight ounces.  Scully tells him that they switched her baby. He tells her that it is over, but she insists that they can prove it. He says that they can’t, and he tells her that the doctors all say that she overreacted to everything—the fear of Hendershot’s pregnancy, and of her own.

Scully tells him that they showed her a tape of someone else’s ultrasound. He says that they said that it was her baby taped onto an old cassette.

She asks him who the men were, and he tells her that their information came from him. They said that they saved her life, and he doesn’t know how he could question that. Scully tells him that they used them to get at Henderson’s baby and now they are using them to cover it up. He just tells her that at least she is okay.

Doggett asks her why she didn’t tell him. She says that she is afraid that they would use it against her and take her off of The X-Files so she couldn’t find Mulder.

Doggett touches her shoulder and tells her that he told her before that he would help her, and that he said that they would find Mulder.

After Doggett leaves, Scully has another flashback:

Scully walks into her apartment to find Mulder lying on her couch. He tells her that he was waiting for her to come home and must have dozed off. He can tell that she is upset. He guesses that it didn’t take, and she confirms his suspicions.

Mulder hugs her as she starts to cry. She tells him that it was her last chance.

Mulder kisses Scully on the forehead and tells her to never give up on a miracle.

Scully kisses Mulder’s neck and they embrace tighter again.

In the present, Scully places her hand on her stomach.
