DEXTER, OKLAHOMA
SEPTEMBER 21, 1990

At a seven-year-old boy, Billy Underwood, is swinging. He is trying to get his mother’s attention because he wants her to watch him swing, but she is not listening. When the camera pans, we can see that she is pregnant.

The boy drops Billy’s dinosaur backpack.

ACT ONE
WEBSTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
DEXTER, OKLAHOMA
TEN YEARS LATER

Ten years later, the mother is talking to her other son, Josh, now ten, in school on the playground. He tells her that they are looking for her. She asks him who they are, but then she sees the faculty (hey a Robert Patrick reference;) standing behind him, staring at her. She asks them what is wrong. One man tells her that they tried to call her, but she must have already left.  She wants to know what’s going on. No one answers her, but merely steps aside. Through a break in the crowd she sees a blond haired boy on a swing. It’s Billy. She runs over to him excited, not thinking anything of the fact that he looks exactly the same as when he was taken ten years ago.

Scully and Doggett are trying to find out what has happened to the boy.

Doggett holds up a missing person poster of Billy, and looks through the glass at him and Scully. Scully is trying to talk to Billy.

DEXTER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
11:02 AM

Doggett and the sheriff talk about Billy. Billy won’t speak, not even to his family. The sheriff tells him that they have been at the hospital with their son around the clock. He tells Doggett that he took his prints, and it is Billy, but he should be a teenager.  The sheriff wants an explanation, but Doggett says that he can’t give him one. He’s just there to find out who took Billy.

He tells Doggett that he talked to everyone at the school. No one saw him come back or how he got there. He just appeared out of the blue.

The sheriff walks away to get some files for Doggett.

Scully approaches Doggett and says that what they have is a healthy seven-year-old boy, who was born seventeen years ago.  Doggett comments on the boy not speaking.

Billy’s parents come in, asking if they are done with him. The woman tells Scully that it’s a miracle. Scully and Doggett look at each other. Scully tells his mother that whatever her son has been through, it has somehow affected his physical condition. She says that they’ve been told that by every doctor there. They just want to take him home. Doggett says that he wants to talk to him first.

Doggett goes into the room alone to talk to Billy. He is drawing some designs on paper. Doggett’s really sweet and tries to get the boy to talk. However, he starts to ask things about who took him. He shows Billy a dinosaur bag from when he was taken and asks if he wants it. Billy goes to take it, but then pulls it away, asking again for a name.

Billy’s mother starts yelling and angrily says she is taking him home.

Scully yells at Doggett for what he did. She asks him if he thinks it’s a game. He tells her that it’s a serious game that they have to win. She asks him if he’s really worked kid cases of child abductions before. He says that he worked on a child abduction task force, and knows the horror stories, but the kid can help them. She tells him that it isn’t just a horror story. It is a biological impossibility. He says that that’s her area of expertise. He just wants to put the person who did it out of business.  He says that Billy did not just show up. He got away or was let go, and if he can talk he can tell them by who, or he can look at photos in the files and point to the man who did it so it doesn’t happen to some other little boy.

Scully tells him that he is ignoring the fact that Billy is still seven years old. He asks her if “failure to thrive” is the term. He asks if there aren’t diseases that delay puberty and so on. She tells him that Billy is not sick. Doggett replies “Good. Then he can talk.” He leaves the room.

Billy’s parents bring him home. His younger brother seems scared of him, and their dog Sparky won’t quit barking at him.

DEXTER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
9:48 PM

Doggett is reading a file when Scully walks into the room. She asks if he slept there as well. He asks her what time it is. She tells him that she spoke to the doctors who treated Billy and looked at his charts. What showed up is that Billy is the same boy who was taken ten years ago. Doggett tells her that they already know that. She tells him that that’s not what she means. He is the same boy. He has no cavities or tooth decay. He still has four baby teeth that he’s never lost. He had a routine blood test six weeks before he disappeared in 1990, and his cell counts, enzymes, and hormone levels are all exactly the same as they were ten years ago. Doggett asks her how that can be possible. She says that it medically impossible. Doggett asks where she’s saying he’s been.

SCULLY: There are X-Files cases that describe similar paranormal findings, alien abductees, who came back with anomalous medical stats.
DOGGETT: You know, these words – anomalous, supernatural, paranormal – they purport to explain something by not explaining it. It’s lazy.

Scully tells him that she’s not saying that she can explain it, but it is definitely not normal.

Doggett opens up the file and tells her that he went back to the crime scene to the day Billy vanished, to a guy, Ronald Parnell.  He hands her the boy’s mug shots. It is the boy from the teaser. He tells her that he was detained, questioned, and dismissed as a suspect. Scully asks him what his interest is in the boy. She hands him back the photo. He tells her that Ronald was a high school dropout, convicted of possession, arson, and shoplifting since 1990.

ScullyDoggett
Scully realizes something and then takes the file and reads it. She tells him that they are juvenile records that are sealed by the court. They are not supposed to have them. He tells her that they are at a standstill. She tells him that he’s breaking the law.  He says that he wants to catch the guy, whatever it takes.

UNDERWOOD RESIDENCE
10:14 PM

Billy’s mother puts him to bed, but he gets up and listens to his parents arguing. His mother says that every night they prayed for him to return. His says that it is not the son he remembers. She asks him how he expects him to act; they told them that it would take time. He tells her that even Josh is afraid of him. She says that he is nothing to be afraid of. He tells her that he wishes he could believe her.

Billy walks back down the hall. The camera pans to show that he is carrying a knife. He goes into his brother’s bedroom and shuts the door.

ACT TWO
BAKER COUNTY, OKLAHOMA
7:42 AM
Doggett visits Ronald’s home. He lives in a rundown trailer with his mother. Just as Doggett gets out of the car, Ronald pulls up in a beat up car. He thinks that Doggett is going to yell at him about his probation, but Doggett tells him that’s not why he came. He asks him if he remembers Billy. The boy tells him that he doesn’t. Doggett says that everyone in the town has heard of him when he disappeared ten years ago. He says that he remembers now. Doggett tells him that he wants to take him to Billy to see if Billy recognizes him. The boy acts confused and says not to bother him. It’s obvious he knows something.

Luke Doggett
When Doggett returns to the car, he takes out his wallet and looks at a picture of a young boy.

In the morning Billy’s mother comes to check on him. He’s not in his room. She goes into Josh’s room, to find a bloody knife on the bed next to Josh. She starts screaming, but Josh wakes up. Nothing has happened to him, and he doesn’t know how the knife got there. They turn to see Billy standing behind them.

DEXTER COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
11:09 AM

The sheriff shows Scully and Doggett the knife that was found in Josh’s bedroom. He ran the blood twice, and it is definitely the little boy’s. Doggett says to him that he said that the boy wasn’t cut. He tells him that he’s misunderstanding him. It’s Billy’s blood. Scully says that Billy wasn’t cut either. The sheriff agrees with her, but says that it is definitely Billy’s prints on over the knife. Doggett asks where he even got it. The sheriff tells them that Billy’s father has never seen it before, and he doesn’t hunt, and has never cleaned an animal, which is about all that that kind of knife is good for, except for killing, of course.

Scully says that she hates to say it, but she thinks that the best thing is to have Billy taken out of his home and put in an institution under the observation of people who are experienced in those things. Doggett doesn’t think they should. The Underwood’s just got him back. She tells him that he is not normal a normal child, and it is not a normal act. Doggett tells her that she sounds like she thinks he’s possessed. He says that he’s a kid who’s been through a lot, and to give him a chance. He asks how she knows that he’s not trying to communicate something. She asks what the message is. He just looks down.  Scully tells him that he is a kid, but he’s a kid who materialized out of this air unaged. She asks him if he doesn’t recognize how strange it is.

Doggett looks down again. He notices that on the handle there is a strange sign. He asks the sheriff if anyone else noticed it.  He tells Doggett that they did, but he wasn’t going to mention it to them, because it’s kind of weird. Doggett asks him how it’s weird. He tells them that when they tried to find out what happened to the boy and who abducted him, they tried everything, and went so far as to call a police psychic. Ten years ago she came up with the same symbol. Scully looks at the handle.  Doggett asks him how he came up with it. He tells him that it’s a she, Sharon Pearl, and he doesn’t know how it came to her.

Billy's drawingScully tells them that she’s seen the symbol before too. She walks into the other room and picks up one of Billy’s drawings.  She looks at it and then holds it up to the glass for them to see. The paper is covered with a lot of black symbols.

Billy’s mother is getting him ready to go see a doctor. She tells him that whatever happened, they can put it behind them. She wants them to be a family. She wants him to help them understand what he’s going through so they can move forward.

When she goes to take him, he tries to pull away so he doesn’t have to go, but she picks him up. Josh watches them leave.

Outside, Billy’s mother is yelling at her husband, saying that she will take him if it is such a strain. He says that if she thinks that the shrink can give them some answers, fine, but he doesn’t want it to ruin their other son’s life.

He starts the car. When he turns around, Billy is gone. Josh watches them search from the window. When he turns around, Billy is there. Josh screams.

Ronny is arguing with his mother when her boyfriend drives up. He’s obviously frightened. The man annoys him for awhile, until his mother calls to him.

Ronny walks into the woods. He keeps walking until he finds what he is looking for. He pulls a small shovel from the ground and starts to dig something up. When he has pulled away enough dirt, the camera pans to show a skull.

UNDERWOOD RESIDENCE
5:53 PM

The psychic, Sharon Pearl, comes to talk to Billy. His father takes Josh out of the house.

Sharon shakes his hand and she looks terrified. She says that there are powerful forces at work there, working through the boy, drawing him to his brother. She drops his hand suddenly, stands up, and looks to Doggett. She says that she feels the force coming through him. Scully looks at Doggett. Sharon says that he has lost someone just like Billy.

Psychic MarkingSuddenly the woman starts shaking violently like she is having a seizure. They help her onto the couch. The strange design from before suddenly appears on the surface of her forehead.

Ronny gets into his car as his mother’s boyfriend comes out. He tries to drive away, but the car won’t start. The man starts bugging him and says that his mother said that the FBI came. The man threatens him with a broken beer bottle and tells him that he better mind his P’s and Q’s or he will tell them what he [Ronny] did to the boy, and what he has buried out in the woods. His mother calls over to her boyfriend, asking what they are doing. Before he starts over, he scratches the boy’s neck with the bottle. The man tells his mother that they were just talking about cars.

Ronald finally gets the car to start, and drives away.

In the car, Scully tells Doggett that they have the woman stabilized, and will be all right. Doggett thinks that the whole thing that happened to Sharon Pearl was a trick.

Scully has a tape recording that she wants him to hear. It is the sounds the woman made when she was shaking. She plays it in reverse and they hear a boy singing. Scully quietly sings the children’s song along with the person on the tape.

Ronny pulls up to Billy’s house. Doggett sees him and starts to go towards him. The boy turns, and suddenly Billy is in the car seat next to him. He is scared and tries to get away.

Doggett sees Billy in the car, but Ronny drives away. Doggett starts after him on foot, but Scully finally catches up to him with her car. Billy has disappeared again. Doggett slams Ronny up against the car, asking where Billy is, but Ronny doesn’t answer him.

DALE’S FOOD AND GAS
9:17 PM

Josh and his father are in the car. His father gets out to go into the gas station. While he is gone, Josh sees someone leading a pony into the barn. He follows them. Finally he finds the horse in a stall. He can only see part of it through the slots in the stall. He reaches his hand into pet the horse, and suddenly someone grabs his arm. The camera pans to show the side of the stall. It says, “Al’s Pony Ride Along.” On it is the same symbol from before.

ACT FOUR
Before Doggett goes in to interrogate Ronny, Scully says:

SCULLY: Count to ten, Agent Doggett.

Doggett tells her that he took Billy, but she tells him that he couldn’t have. Doggett asks how she is going to back that up, now that Billy is missing from his home. She says that she will by the certain knowledge that not five minutes earlier she saw him enter his home with his mother. Doggett protests that he saw him too, riding in the car with Ronny. He asks why else Ronny would take off like he did.

Scully tells him that it is impossible like everything else about the case, like how Billy can be in his home one minute, and in Ronny’s car the next. Everything about the case is impossible. Doggett tells her that the kid is the key; he’s been saying that from the beginning.

The sheriff comes in and tells them that he has bad news on top of worse: Josh has disappeared. He tells her that he has the parents out there now.

Scully starts to follow the sheriff, but Doggett tells her that he has to talk to Ronny, and lets her go without him.

Doggett interrogates Ronny, trying to find out what happened. Ronny tells him that he knows what he is going to ask, and he has no answers. Doggett says that there can be only one answer, why else would he go to his house. Doggett says that he went there for Billy, to get him back. Ronny tells him he’s wrong. Doggett says that he had him in his car, but Ronny replies that he doesn’t know how he got there. He asks him why else he would go to the house at all. Ronny tells him it is because he didn’t believe him.

In Ronny’s mind, he sees Billy swinging. Ronny is standing there watching him, holding a hypodermic needle.

Doggett asks him what is so hard to believe. Ronny tells him that he said he could talk to him. He tells Ronny that he needed to talk to him, and that after all those years, he wanted him back. He asks where Ronny kept him all those years.

In his mind, Ronny sees himself moving floorboards. Underneath is Billy, bound and gagged.

Ronny tells Doggett that he doesn’t understand. Doggett just says that Ronny was sorry he let him go. Ronny says that he couldn’t let him go.

Again in his mind, Ronny sees himself. He starts to sing to Billy. It’s the same voice from the reversed recording. He brings a knife to Billy’s hands, ready to free him, but he turns to see someone behind him.

Doggett asks who else knew about him, and where he kept him. He says that he didn’t. Doggett screams asking what he did to Billy, but he tells him that he didn’t do anything. He looks like he might cry. He says that he took care of him. He sang to him so he wouldn’t be afraid. Doggett asks who he was afraid of, thinking that maybe someone else made Ronny do it. He asks Ronny if he took Billy’s brother too. He doesn’t answer him.

Doggett figures out what is going on. He asks if Ronny is afraid of him too. He guesses that was a victim, just like the other kids. He tells them that the two of them have a chance to get him. He asks him what his name is.

Scully and Doggett arrive at the playground. They come to the stall where the symbol is.

Once inside, they lift up the floorboards and find Josh tied up underneath. They help him up.

They see Ronny’s mother’s boyfriend running away and Doggett chases after him. When he catches up with him he makes him get down on his knees. Doggett asks him where the other boy is. He tells him that there is no other boy. Doggett hears something, and when he turns around, Billy is suddenly standing behind him. Doggett yells for someone to handcuff the man and read him his rights. He turns around to Billy, but he’s gone.

Doggett runs through the woods where the boy went, until he steps on something. He looks down. It’s the skull that the boy partially uncovered before.

Later at the crime scene, Billy’s family has seen the skeleton and they are crying, looking at Billy’s skeleton in the ground.

Doggett walks over to Scully and tells her that he doesn’t believe it. She tells him that the clothes, the age and condition of the bones, and the location of the grave, gives her no doubt that it is Billy Underwood’s skeleton that is in the grave. Doggett says that they spent time with Billy, doctors took his blood, and she examined him herself. He can’t accept it or believe that they’re asking them too. Scully says that she knows, but the forensic evidence is going to come out, and what then, what if she’s right.  He repeats “What then,” and asks what they do. Do they move on and let it go, case closed? She tells him that she knows where he is; she’s been there before. She says that he feels like he’s failed and that he has to explain it somehow, and maybe he can.

DOGGETT: Not if that’s Billy’s body I can’t.
SCULLY: But maybe that’s explanation enough. That that’s not Billy’s brother lying in that grave too. That that man who did this is never gonna to be able to do it again. Isn’t that what you wanted, Agent Doggett?
DOGGETT: Agent Scully, don’t ask me to believe that this is some kind of justice from beyond the grave.
SCULLY: All I’m saying is that maybe you succeeded, whether you’re willing to see that or not.

Scully walks away.

Doggett looks at Billy’s parents, who are crying.
