TEASER
At the gravesite at "Santa's North Pole Village," Mulder gives a voice over as the agents uncover the children's bodies from the graves.
MULDER
(Voice Over):
They said the birds refused to sing, and the thermometer fell
suddenly, as if God himself had his breath stolen away. No one there dared speak
aloud, as much in shame as in sorrow. They uncovered the bodies one by one. The
eyes of the dead were closed, as if waiting for permission to open them. Were
they still dreaming of ice cream and monkey bars? Of birthday cake and no future
but the afternoon? Or had their innocence been taken along with their lives,
buried in the cold earth so long ago? These fates seem too cruel even for God to
allow. Or are the tragic young born again when the world's not looking? I want
to believe so badly in a truth beyond our own, hidden and obscured from all but
the most sensitive eyes
The agents disappear as it turns night. Ghosts of the children emerge from their graves. They come together in a circle and hold hands.
In the endless procession of souls, in what cannot and will not be destroyed. I want to believe we are unaware of God's eternal recompensant sadness, that we cannot see His truth. That that which is born still lives, and cannot be buried in the cold earth, but only waits to be born again at God's behest. Where in ancient starlight we lay, opposed.
The angle turns up to the dark, starless sky.
ACT ONE
TECHNICAL SERVICES ROOM
SACRAMENTO POLICE STATION
Scully
walks into the room to find some agents, and Mulder, who is studying some
slides. She tells him that Ed Truelove confessed to 24 murders, all except for
the disappearance of Amber Lynn LaPierre's. He has been killing since he was
19. She tells him that she was handed the preliminary report, and Amber Lynn was
not among the bodies. She tells Mulder that she knows he was hoping to find his
sister. He tells her that she doesn't know how badly he wishes that she was
one of the children in the graves, so he would know the truth. He wants it to be
over.
An agent comes in and tells them that there is a Harold Piller that wants to see them.
Harold Piller is a police psychic. He tells them some information he says that he picked up about the case. However, he is only known in foreign countries. Scully wants to know what he's done, and he describes a train wreck, and that seven children were killed and no bodies were found. He tells her that he didn't find the bodies, but gave them an explanation of what happened. The children's bodies were transported from the accident site by a spiritual intervention walk-ins. Scully thinks it's just a hoax and dismisses him. Mulder isn't sure, and he lets Piller continue. He tells Mulder that in all of the different instances, the children's bodies were transported in starlight.
Scully pulls Mulder to the side, asking him to stop. She tells him that he has been through so much in so short of time, that he's vulnerable. He tells her that they still have to find Amber Lynn, and she says that Piller will not help them. He tells her that he's heard about the starlight before from Kathy Lee Tencate, that that was who took her son. Scully tells him that Tencate believes that because it's foolproof nobody will disprove it if there is no body. She says that it is exactly what Piller is doing, giving a comforting explanation that everyone can live with, but the bodies are still buried. Mulder disagrees and says that maybe they are somewhere else.
SCULLY:
Like your sister. Mulder. You told me that all you wanted was for this to be
over.
MULDER: I do. I do.
SCULLY: Well, then I'm going back to Washington. There's nothing more to be
done here.
Mulder seems very upset that she is leaving. (I think she just thinks that he will eventually follow her if she leaves.)
Mulder and Piller go to the gravesite. Mulder asks Piller how long he's been doing this job. He tells him that he had a son that was taken away from him, and that his body was never found. Then one day, he just started to see the ghosts.
Mulder asks him why the walk-ins come to take the children. He tells him that in almost every case, the parents had a precognitive image of their child dead. He believes that it is the work of good spirits, foretelling the children's violent fates that weren't meant to be. The walk-in transformed their matter into pure energy. He says however that it is not what happened this time.
Piller tells him that the children that died there were all suffering and pleading for their lives, and that Amber Lynn is not connected to them, but rather to Mulder. He guesses correctly that Mulder lost a sister long ago. He tells him that they are connected, but he doesn't know how. He says though that he is sure that they are going to find them.
At
the bureau, Scully watches Mulder's regression hypnosis tape from 1989, that tells of the night of his sister's disappearance, with an
agent. He tells Scully that it all seemed legitimate up to one point. He thinks
it was a compensatory abduction fantasy for Mulder's guilt, fear, and whatever
has been preventing him from knowing what really happened that night. Samantha
disappeared in 1973 but Mulder wasn't regressed until 1989. His delusion is
playing into his unconscious hope that his sister is still alive, and his
delusion has an effect of giving him a reason to pursue her.
Scully
asks why it was alien abduction. He tells her that there was probably a lot of
imagery collecting in his mind during those sixteen years, and then he comes
there and finds the X-Files.
She
asks him what he thinks happened to his sister. He guesses that she was probably
kidnapped, killed, and never found. Scully questions why he thinks Samantha is
dead. He asks her if she has seen her file. The search for his sister was very
extensive even the treasury department got involved. His father was high up
in the government, so the search was thorough, but
they found nothing.
He asks her why she is bringing the case back up.
SCULLY:
Someone owes it to Mulder.
AGENT: Word of advice, me to you, let it be. You know, there are some wounds
that are just too painful ever to be reopened.
SCULLY: Well, this particular wound has never healed. And Mulder deserves
closure just like anyone.
RED
CARRIAGE HOTEL
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
In Mulder's hotel room at few minutes after three a.m., "Planet of the
Apes" is playing on the television. It is at the end when a man says,
"There's gotta be an answer." Then the ape replies, "Don't look for
it, Taylor. You may not like what you find." (we've heard that multiple
times before and obviously it's a parallel to this story line: Other than in WotC, there is a similar quote in "Sein Und Zeit" when Scully says "Don't go looking for something you don't want to find.")
There is a knock at the door. Piller wakes Mulder up saying that someone is in
his hotel room his mother.
Unconvinced, Mulder takes a pen and a pad of paper as instructed by Piller. Piller sees a ghost of Tena, and tells Mulder that she wants to tell him about his sister. He loses the vision.
Now Mulder thinks Piller is full of it and tries to get him to leave his room. He holds up the paper to Mulder. It says "April Base." Mulder wrote it himself and didn't know it.
ACT TWO
Scully goes to Tena Mulder's house. She finds the wastebasket where the pictures were burned. Inside is a scrap of paper that was left that is from the original of a document that ceased the investigation into Samantha's disappearance. It's signed C.G.B.S. C.G.B. Spender.
Scully calls Mulder, who's on his way with Piller to the base, and tells him about the document and Cigarette-Smoking Man's signature, but he tells her that CSM is not involved and will be of no help to them.
Mulder and Piller arrive to the base. Mulder thinks that they came for nothing, and wants to leave.
MULDER: Not exactly the end of the rainbow, is it Harold?
Someone comes and they are sent away.
Scully enters her apartment to find that CSM has been waiting for her.
CSM:
Got it all figured out, don't you, Agent Scully?
SCULLY: All but why you can't just come to the door and knock.
CSM: I did that, no one answered.
She tells him that he [looks] sick. He tells her that he had an operation. He wants Mulder to stop looking for Samantha, that no one is going to find her. He tells Scully that he believes she is dead. She asks him if he knew why he didn't say anything earlier instead of now. He tells her that there was so much to protect, but that it's all gone now. She knows that he knew, and just let Mulder suffer. He tells her that he couldn't tell Mulder his search gives him hope.
CSM leaves.
Mulder and Piller go back to the base and find Samantha's handprints in cement in front of a house. Piller says to Mulder that he told him that they would find her. Mulder says that he didn't tell him with who. Below her prints are a set of prints that are labeled "Jeffrey."
ACT THREE
Scully comes back and talks to Mulder. He tells her that she was right and that Cigarette-Smoking Man is involved. He tells her that he raised Samantha at that house, along with Jeffrey Spender.
Scully tells Mulder that CSM came to talk to her and told her that Samantha was dead. Mulder thinks that he is a liar. Scully asks him why he would lie now. She tells him that it hurts her to tell him this.
Mulder gets up shouting and waving his arms around. It's clear how upset they both are. He tells her that he saw her handprints in the cement and that it proves Samantha is alive. He says that Piller lead him to them.
Scully does not believe Piller. She starts to raise her voice as well.
SCULLY: Oh, he led you Mulder. He led you from the moment he met you.
Mulder and Scully go to see Piller. Mulder tells him that Scully told him that he failed to mention to him that he is a subject of a criminal investigation into the murder of his son. He tells him that his son was taken from him, and that the police need someone to blame. Scully says that he is also schizophrenic. He tells him that he wouldn't have listened to him if he had told him that.
PILLER:
Look what I've shown you.
MULDER: You only tell me what you see.
PILLER: I came to you because I wanna help. If you think I'm a fraud, what do
I have to gain from this? How am I any different from you [Mulder]? All I want
is to find my son. I, I just, I just want my little boy back
I see these
things, I don't know how, but there has got to be a reason. And if it's not
to help, what is it?
I know your sister is out there. Maybe I can prove it to
you.
Mulder looks to Scully as if for approval of the idea.
They all go to the house on the base. Piller tells them that they are going to hold hands. He is going to try to summon their presence.

SCULLY (deadpan) : Oh, yay, a seyonse. I haven't done that since high school.
The three of them join hands in a circle and close their eyes.
Suddenly, there are ghosts all around them. Mulder suddenly opens his eyes and sees a little boy (is it supposed to be Piller's son, or Mulder when he was young maybe??). The boy leads him by the hand into another room. Scully doesn't realize for awhile that Mulder is gone.
Mulder finds a bookshelf. Scully and Piller come over. Mulder smashes against the wall until it breaks and he finds a diary. Samantha's diary.

At
the hotel café Mulder and Scully read the diary. At 14, Samantha tells of the
horrible tests done to her, and that she lies to them, in order to tell them
what they want to hear. In one of the last entries, she says that the doctors
took away most of her memories, but not all of them. She thinks she had a
brother with dark hair that teased him, but she really can't remember for
sure. In the last entry she says that she wants to run away. Both Mulder and
Scully are almost in tears. Scully covers Mulder's hand with her own.
They walk out of the café and Mulder looks up at the sky, musing about the walk-ins, and how maybe they really did take the children. Scully tells him to go get some sleep, and he laughs at the common suggestion.
During the night, Mulder is sleeping when his mother's ghost whispers something in his ear.
ACT FOUR
The next morning, Scully comes to his room with a paper, a sergeant's blotter from 1979, that she somehow found. It matches Samantha's description exactly.
DOMINIC
SAVIO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
4:08 PM
Mulder and Scully look through files at the hospital. They find one that Mulder
thinks is Samantha, although the file has no name. The girl was schizophrenic
and wouldn't give anyone her name or let them touch her. The conclusions were
incomplete. There is no doctor's name on the file. Mulder knows that CSM must
have known what happened to Samantha. On the folder, they find the name of the
nurse that took care of his sister.
VICTORVILLE,
CALIFORNIA
Mulder, Scully, and Piller arrive at the nurse's home. Mulder wants Scully and
Piller to go in without him.
SCULLY:
What's wrong?
MULDER: I have this powerful feeling, and I can't explain it, but that, this
is the end of the road. That I've been brought here to learn the truth.
SCULLY: Are you ready for it?
MULDER sadly shakes his head yes
SCULLY: Do you want me to go talk to her myself?
MULDER shakes his head in affirmation again
SCULLY: Okay.
The nurse tells Scully and Piller that she remembers the girl. She starts to say that when she tucked her into bed for the night, she swore she saw her lying there dead, but when she turned back she was all right, but half of this is interrupted and said by Piller. She tells him that no one ever believed her. She says that somehow, it made some kind of strange sense. During the night some men came to take her, the one she presumed was her father gave her a chill when she asked him to put out his cigarette. When she brought the men to [Samantha's] room, she was gone had vanished out of a locked room.
Scully and Piller turn back to tell Mulder, but he is gone.
The
ghost boy from before leads Mulder back behind some trees. There he sees happy
children (ghosts) running around. Suddenly he sees a familiar face.
Samantha runs up to Mulder and hugs him. She is about 14. Mulder has a look of pure joy.
When Mulder comes out of the trees, Scully asks him what happened.
SCULLY:
Mulder, where'd you go?
MULDER: End of the road.
He tells Piller that he saw his son, and that he is dead, but in a better place, as well as his sister is.
MULDER:
You see so much. But you refuse to see him. You refuse to let him go. But you
have to let him go now, Harold. He's protected; he's in a better place.
They're all in a better place. We both have to let go, Harold.
PILLER: You're wrong! I'm going to find him! I don't believe you!
PILLER runs off.
Mulder watches Harold leave, wishing he could help him to understand what he finally has.
SCULLY:
Are you sure you're all right?
MULDER: I'm fine. I'm free.
Mulder looks up into the night sky and smiles. Now, he can finally let go.
