TEASER

The episode opens in a prison yard where a tornado is coming down. The one inmate, Wilson Pinker Rawls, gets mad at an inmate beside him and hammers a nail into his hand.

A prison superintendent takes Rawls and locks him in "the box" during the tornado.

The next morning, Pinker and the box are gone.

ACT ONE
Scully autopsies the body of the prison guard and is unsure what happened to him. Part of his abdomen is missing and part of his body is made like ash. The only thing she can think of is that it could be acid, but Mulder's tells her that they didn't find any in the man's office.

Scully then guesses Mulder's theory as "spontaneous human combustion," and he leers at her making some shippy comments.

SCULLY: Spontaneous human combustion.
MULDER (smiling & leering): Scully?
SCULLY: Well, isn't that where you're going with this?
MULDER: Dear Diary: Today my heart leapt when Agent Scully suggested spontaneous human combustion.
SCULLY: Mulder, there are one or two somewhat well documented cases.
MULDER rolls his eyes like she's nuts.
<pause>
SCULLY: Mulder, shut up.

Mulder tells Scully that he doesn't have a theory, but that he knows someone who does.

The agents arrive at the crime scene where the prison guard was killed. The officer there knows that Rawls did it, but he doesn't know how. He tells them that Pinker was mad at the guard for locking him in the box during the tornado. He says however that all that is left of the box is a small piece that they found three miles away. He tells him all he knows is that the place was locked and boarded from the inside, and that no *man* could get in.

After the man leaves, Scully asks Mulder if they are looking for a dead man. He tells her that he thinks that Rawls is alive - they never found the body.

Scully says that from what she knows about spontaneous human combustion, it might not be murder - it could have been caused by the tornado, or by lightning.

Mulder thinks that it was murder. Scully wants to know how the man was murdered.

Mulder touches the wall and sees that it is cracked. He pushes on it and it cracks more. He gives it a big push and a piece of the brittle wall falls through to the outside.

MULDER: Termites?

Mulder and Scully go to see Rawls's bunk area to look at his belongings. Scully finds out that Pinker stole $90,000 but that it was never recovered.

Mulder is sifting through a box of Rawls's belongings when he finds something that grabs his attention.

MULDER: Hey, look at this.
MULDER holds up a long strip of condoms.
MULDER (in a teasing voice) : Ouch.

Mulder finds a picture of Rawls with a girl, and they wonder who it is.

MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI
A woman sits drinking coffee with her boyfriend. Presumably she is the woman in the picture.

News of the tornado comes on the screen. It tells of two victims - the prison guard and Rawls Pinker. The woman acts odd and leaves the room.

10:54 PM
A security guard goes into a closed store where he sees Rawls. Pinker is putting on clothes. The guard yells at him and tells him to put them back but he doesn't. He continues to mock the man by taking more stuff. Finally the guard handcuffs Rawls to a pole.

The guard calls for help, while unbeknownst to him, Rawls has slipped the handcuffs off of his wrists.

While on the phone, the guard hears a horn, and looks out the window to see Rawls drive away with his police car.

Mulder and Scully end up in the Valu-Mart talking to the cop. They show him a picture of Pinker, asking for identification. He tells them it could be him - it was dark so he really isn't sure. He tells them that the man that broke in was like Houdini. Mulder asks to see the handcuffs, which he taps on the pole and then cracks into two. Mulder asks if they have a last known address of Pinker Rawls.

At Pinker's old house, he digs through stuff looking for something. Someone he obviously had known, and the owner of the house now comes in. Bo tells Pinker that they had been saying on the news that he was dead. Pinker just asks where "she" is.

Bo asks if he means June, and that she left him and moved out four years ago, but that he can get him an address.

The man walks over to the desk and reaches for the gun inside. Pinker taunts him. Finally, the man shoots. Bullets fly through Rawls's chest, but they do not phase him.

Pinker walks towards Bo, and the screen fades to black as Bo screams.

ACT TWO
Mulder and Scully arrive at Pinker's old house where the see the security guard's car. Inside they find Bo's body - without a face.

MULDER (in disgust): Gesundheit.

Scully tells Mulder that there are bullet casings everywhere but no bullet holes.

Mulder takes out Bo's wallet. His full name is Bo Merkle. They realize that he owns the house.

Scully figures that Pinker was probably looking for the money, since it hadn't been recovered. Obviously by the looks of it, Bo hadn't spent it.

Mulder looks at the picture of Pinker with his old girlfriend, and realizes that it was at the same house. Scully says that she will find her name. Mulder thinks Rawls is looking for the girl.

Mulder goes over to where the bullets that Bo shot ended up. He pulls one out of the door. With his knife, it breaks into a powdery substance.

Outside, while Mulder is looking at the bullets that are now in an evidence bag, Scully comes over and tells him that she has the name - June Gurwitch. However there is no current address listed or a record on her since 1996. Mulder says as they watch Bo's dead body being wheeled out that maybe she changed her name to avoid ending up like that.

Scully sees the bullets Mulder has and says that even if they were bullets that changed into that composition, they still would have killed Rawls. Mulder tells her that he thinks the bullets went right through him, like his wrist through the handcuffs, and that he walked through the prison walls. He thinks that Rawls can change the composition of matter, making steel brittle, or turning lead bullets into powder, or even turning flesh into carbon.

Scully asks Mulder about the science, and Mulder says that it may be able to be explained by science, that maybe the tornado caused it, just like she had said.

SCULLY: I'm sorry I even brought it up.

Mulder tells Scully that they need to find June. Scully tells him that she has a sister, Jackie, and that they have the address.

Jackie calls June to warn her that the FBI came and that she should try calling Pinker, because he may not be dead.

Jackie hears someone in the house - its Pinker. She locks herself into a room, blocking the door. Naked, the man is suddenly in the room. Holding a knife, Jackie will not tell him where June is.

Mulder and Scully arrive and look around.

On a door, Mulder sees "I want what's mine."

Inside the room, Pinker is gone and Jackie is all right.

Outside, Scully tells Mulder that her son's spending the night at a friend's house and that she didn't tell Rawls where sister is. Scully says that she also told her that he walked through the wall.

Mulder sees Merkle's car and tells her that that is how he got there, but he didn't leave that way. Scully says that maybe he escaped on foot. Mulder however, wants to know why he left without getting the answers he wanted. Scully tells him that the local police can send a search, but that they have to go to Meridian, where June lives. She's now called June Berdet.

Rawls is in Mulder and Scully's trunk.

ACT THREE
6:12 AM

Mulder and Scully arrive at June's house where they are greeted by her boyfriend, Robert. He had no idea she had an alias. He yells to her. Scully explains to him that a convict has escaped and that she might be in danger. June comes out of the house. She suspects Pinker is alive.

In the house, when asked, June tells Mulder and Scully that Rawls was simply a mistake. She had lived with him before. From across the room, Robert is obviously upset, having known nothing about it.

Mulder asks about the money, and she says that Pinker was already in prison when she found the money, by accident. She tells them that she just wanted another chance.

Mulder and Scully want to put June and Robert in protective custody, but Robert tells them that he wants to go to his own place, he didn't break any laws, and that Pinker isn't after him. It is obvious he is mad at June. They let him.

Mulder puts June's suitcase in the trunk and notices that it's cracked. He tells the other cops to take June and have a cop around her at all times. They realize that Rawls was in the trunk and that they took him right where he wanted to go.

Back in the house Mulder looks around but doesn't find anything. Scully calls him. On the wall is written, "I want what's mine."

MULDER: You think he's trying to tell us something?

Later, Mulder is touching the writing on the wall. He finds that Pinker's message stops right before the mirror, and the message is not quite finished.

He tells Scully his theory, that Pinker can somehow transform the state of matter to pass through it, by electricity. Mulder thinks that therefore Pinker cannot pass through an insulator, such as the mirror, rubber, or glass.

Mulder has special bullets made that have rubber in them. Rawls couldn't pass through the mirror.

Scully wants to know, assuming he is correct, why Rawls would go to so much trouble to get the money back - he could get that anywhere. Mulder tells her that it's not about the money, it never has been. Scully says that he turned the place upside-down looking for something. She thinks that it has to do with something she found - a paper, a lean, on unpaid hospital bills from 1992. The patient was June. The paper has a hospital documentation code that means pregnancy. June had a c-section. It was right after Rawls was sent to prison. He's looking for his child.

June is under protection of a cop. She's sitting on a bed fidgeting. The cop won't let her make a phone call or smoke. The camera pans to show something above her - a face coming through the ceiling, and then, a hand as his profile appears.

ACT FOUR
At the scene, where June was being protected, the cop is dead on the floor. A cop tells Mulder and Scully that Rawls took June with him. He was last seen heading south. They don't know how to save the child because they have no address. Scully says that June might not either if the child was adopted. She tells him that the best bet is to go through state records, although, it will take awhile.

Mulder asks for special issue equipment.

In the car, June finally tells Rawls that his son's name is Trevor Andrew. He wants her to take him to Trevor.

While Scully checks on names, Mulder is finding out more information. Scully comes over as Mulder receives a package he needs - inside is slugs made of rubber.

All Mulder has found out is that the child was a boy. There are no other records. Scully says that maybe she went through unofficial channels, and that maybe the boy is staying at a friend's or relative's.

Trevor is at Jackie's house. The phone rings as Jackie hears a knock. She goes to the door. On the answering machine is Mulder. June is at the door, who she lets in. She tells Jackie she's very sorry, as Rawls follows in behind her.

Pinker finds that the boy had been living with his aunt, believing it was his mother. Rawls plans to take Trevor away with him. When Trevor goes to pack after being told to do so, Jackie throws hot soup from the stove at Rawls. It doesn't do anything, so she starts beating him with the pan. She yells to Trevor to run. Pinker knocks out Jackie and follows him into the woods.

Before Rawls can catch up, Trevor finds Mulder and Scully. Mulder tells Scully to take Trevor, and then he proceeds to yell at Rawls threatening to shoot him. As Rawls runs towards him he shoots him a few times, which knocks him backwards with each shot. He starts to run away from Mulder - right into a wall where his clothes slump to the ground as he passes through it.

Mulder goes into the house where he finds Jackie on the floor.

Outside, Trevor and Scully run to the car, but before Scully can unlock the door, Pinker is there. The two dash for the telephone booth.

Rawls can't break through the booth because it is made of glass. He uses the next best thing, a large rock, which he pounds into the glass until it breaks.

Pinker looks at his son, seemingly having a revelation, and turns around and walks away.

June suddenly drives up in a car and runs head-on into Rawls. He is killed by the glass windshield.

When June asks why he did it, Mulder says that maybe he just wanted another chance.
