TEASER

The episode starts out with a couple, Laura and Wayne, looking at a sonogram. The doctor tells them that they found a development of an abnormal formation, involving the upper vertebrae and plates of the skull. He thinks though, that it might just be an intermediate stage of growth.

Out in the corridor, Laura tells Wayne everything will be all right. He says, "I just want it to be normal."

HOLLINS VIRGINIA
That night, Wayne brings Laura milk and tells her that he loves her, no matter what. Laura has a dream that a demon comes into her room and steals her baby. She wakes up screaming, her husband trying to calm her. He looks down; he has blood on his hands. He pulls back the covers to reveal that his wife is covered in blood.

ACT ONE
A cop, Stevens, is telling someone about the case. The camera pans around to Agent Spender. Spender mentions that Laura is Stevens' sister. Spender tells Stevens that he came to the right place. Once Stevens has walked out of the room, Spender puts the paper from the case through the shredder.

Stevens is sitting in a car with Mulder. Mulder is holding the paper that has been glued together. Mulder tells Stevens that he wouldn't say anything about him taking the case, that the FBI makes their cases "hush-hush." When Stevens says he wants to thank Spender, Mulder says he will tell Spender for him, not wanting him to know that he really isn't supposed to be on the case.

Mulder talks to Laura and Wayne. Laura tells of how the baby was "some kind of monster, with horns and a tail." When Laura has left the room, Mulder tells Wayne that Laura said when she was dreaming and looked to her side Wayne was not in the bed. Wayne says that it was only a dream.

Scully is doing a background check on some man, when Mulder calls her. He tells her he is in Roanoke investigating a case of demon fetal harvest. He wants her to check out Laura's sonogram. He tells her that what is happening has been called Atum Nocturnem women being impregnated by a dark lord of the underworld. Scully tells him that she saw "Rosemary's Baby" on cable.

Wayne is listening to everything Mulder says on a baby monitor.

10:56 p.m.
Laura is looking for her nightgown, so she goes outside to find Wayne. He is outside digging up something, presumably the baby, and then sticks it in a furnace. When Laura gets outside, Wayne convinces her he was just burning leaves.

The next day, Mulder is sleeping in his car when Scully calls. While Mulder is talking to her, he is drawing horns on a picture of Wayne. He asks Scully if the abnormalities would have been passed on by the father. Scully thinks it was from the mother, and tells Mulder that he has to put her under arrest, because of the abortion laws and Virginia. Scully says that there is proof that labor was induced, and a significant amount of "Mandrake" was found in her bloodstream. The drug is used to facilitate self-abortions and is also used as a hallucinogen.

Mulder watches Wayne drive off. Mulder gets out of the car and heads towards the house.

Wayne listens to "Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage as he goes to another house and meets a pregnant woman, Betsy, his other wife. He has come to check on his baby.

ACT TWO
Mulder has gone in to arrest Laura. Stevens is there is well. Stevens is screaming at Mulder and telling him that his sister didn't do it.

Wayne comes in and Stevens tells him that Mulder is accusing his wife of killing the baby. Mulder says:

MULDER: I don't want to arrest Laura. I'm sure you'd hate like the devil for that to happen as well.

Mulder tells Wayne to let them search his house. Wayne agrees.

Wayne tells Laura his "story." He tells her that during the night the baby was taken, he could sleep and had gotten out of bed. When he returned, he found her holding and killing the baby.

Laura admits that she took the drugs, but that she didn't mean to hurt the baby. Mulder knows that she is lying.

Stevens has to take Laura to the station.

As Mulder walks out, he says to Wayne:

MULDER: I know what you are.

Wayne is talking to Betsy on the phone, and is on his way to her house. Mulder catches up with him and asks him were he's going. He says to a woman's house, he is an insurance medical technician. Mulder follows him, so he goes to some woman's house, collecting her blood early. The woman notices some lumps on the back of Wayne's neck.

Scully calls Mulder and tells him that he's busted. Wayne called Kersh and told him that Mulder was harassing him. When Wayne comes out, he tells Mulder to leave him alone. Scully asks Mulder what she should tell Kersh. He says to say he's doing a background check on somebody.

ROANOKE COUNTY JAIL
Laura has requested to see Wayne. She tells him that he's scared not about going to jail, but about his "story." She says that it makes no sense. She says that he had told her that he had wrapped up the baby too hide it, but they found it wrapped in her nightgown from the night she lost the baby. He says she must be mistaken. Laura tells him that she remembered something she didn't tell anyone, not even him. The monster's face...She moves forward and hugs him to touch his neck. There are lumps there. He says she shouldn't have done that.

WAYNE: I just wish you could've been the one.

Wayne grabs her, and literally, takes away her breath.

ACT THREE
The paramedics arrive, and work on Laura. Finally, they get a heartbeat. Wayne looks very confused.

Wayne goes to Betsy's and she tells him how her sonogram went. It showed abnormal growths on the baby, but the doctors said to wait and see.

ROANOKE COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER
10:02 p.m.

Mulder tells Scully that he was actually doing a background check. Scully tells him that she didn't find anything. Laura had no evidence of a reason for being in a coma. Mulder thinks that it's perfect, it's what he had hoped. He tells her what he found out. Wayne was born in Czechoslovakia and had had different names besides Wayne Weinsider. In one language, his one name was synonymous with the devil, as in other languages it had similar meanings. Scully asks that if Wayne was a demon, why he would take time to be a father to get the babies. Mulder says that he's not a psychologist, but that that's the best explanation he has. [But Mulder is a psychologist!]

Wayne is making something, which he pours into a cup and gives to Betsy. It is glowing, but when he brings it to her it looks like milk. She drinks it.

Mulder and Scully are at the first crime scene. He tells Stevens to put an APB out for Wayne. Scully asks Mulder if he thinks Wayne is trying to propagate, to breed. Mulder says he is exerting his biological imperative, doing anything to succeed. Scully wants to know then why he would be killing the babies. Mulder tells her, because they are demons. Wayne wants to have a normal child.

Betsy sees the demon like Laura did before. However, when the demon starts to pull her forward, she asks Wayne what he is doing. He doesn't answer her, so she repeats it, yelling at him.

ACT FOUR
Mulder and Scully are in their car. Mulder is on his cell phone and has found that Wayne has another home, across Roanoke County. Scully wants to know if Mulder thinks he has another wife. Mulder says that Wayne plants as many seeds as he can.

Suddenly, a car approaches Mulder and Scully, and Betsy gets out. She is covered in blood. She says that Wayne took her baby.

Mulder and Scully go into Betsy's house. They find Wayne outside digging. Mulder tells him that it's over. Scully says that whatever truth there is, he can't hope to bury it. Wayne says that he's not burying anything, he digging it up. They want to know where the baby is. Wayne asks if they don't understand. Betsy took it. Mulder tells him that he can't blame anyone, like he blamed Laura. He tells them that Betsy's not like Laura. Betsy is…

Stevens interrupts him, shooting him.

WAYNE: I just wanted what everyone wants.

At the hospital, Mulder gets Stevens to stay away from Wayne so he won't hurt him again.

Wayne looks to Laura lying in the next hospital bed. He grips the bed and starts jerking. The machine monitoring his breathing goes faster. He opens his mouth and his "life force" comes out and flies over to Laura, who starts jerking as well. Wayne flatlines and Laura wakes out of her coma.

Scully is uncovering a body from the ground. Mulder comes over and asks her how many babies there are there. She tells him that there are four total, however that these babies have been there for awhile, maybe years, and are all normal, having no deformities. She tells him that Betsy's baby isn't there. There are no fresh graves. He says that he knows. Scully asks what he thinks Wayne did with the babies. He replies "nothing." She tells Mulder that she saw Betsy's sonograms. Mulder agrees, and says that her baby had the same defects. He tells her that the babies aren't Wayne's.

MULDER:
I think Wanye realized something last night. That's why he was out digging. He realized that he met someone even more evil than he was. Who would sacrifice what he desperately wanted for himself.

Mulder tells Scully that it's no coincidence Betsy came to them. She tricked them as well. She would do anything to have what only Wayne could give her.

Betsy is driving listening to "Only Happy When It Rains." She looks to the passenger seat to her baby, who has arms of a monster. The camera pans, and her eyes turn red, like a demon's.
